What were the things people would be pelted with while in stocks. I know stones were probably the most common missile, as there are several 'accidental' deaths that resulted from people being pelted with stones but were things like eggs (rotton I would guess, who would waste a perfectly good egg when it could be eated), excrement (horse? human?), buckets of urine etc used? I have heard people mention these things but I have never come across anything otherwise stating that these substances were used.

The stocks are usually set up in the town Square also used as a marketplace so how about mouldy/soft vegetables, rotting fruit, etc.

From researching this very same issue at many a 'Ye Olde Renni Fest" I can say with absolute certainty it was common cellulose sponges soaked in water.

Mud, garbage, ugly muckety things lying around here and there.

considering that the stocks were a penalty for minor offenses, stones were probably discouraged.
Mud, rotting (ie: soft!) fruit, even horse crap I could put up with, but if somebody started throwing rocks, and I survived, I'd come a'lookin for them when I got out and God help them when I found them.

Oh no, not poop.....

That would be horrible, what if some got in your eye.

Gives a new meaning to the word "Shit slinger" doesn't it?
