the axeman executioner

Post by Wyrm »

I am looking for any artwork of whatever period showing executions, chopping blocks, the axe or item involved and how the executioner was dressed.

I have one image on 14th century so far and the one that comes up on the archive but I am looking for more images. So far I havent found much to make me think the common movie image of a black hooded axeman had any historical basis, if it did and someone knows please enlighten me.

Much thanks.

You may well profit from looking for a copy of "Justice Through the Ages" a publication of the medieval Criminal Justice Museum in Rothenburg ODT, Germany.

They have quite a bit of information on executioners---not one of the better career choices back then BTW---and several pictures of execution equipment both extant examples and period illustrations.

It's a nice museum to visit too.
