What is it my preciousesssss......?

Post by Mike Garrett (Orc) »

Now, I bought this, personally it has a distinctly Romano-British look to it, but that may be pure ignorance at work. It hasn't arrived yet so I can't give any more details.
Anyone shed any light on wether it's a historical replica or imaginary piece. I certainly know it's not a "medieval knights helmet" :)

I am not completely up on oll the off shoots of roman helms but, It might look like a crappy knock off of some kind of bastardized roman spangen infantry helm. Somewhere in my mind I remember seeing an example of a roman spangen helm, I just can remember if it had cheek plates like that or a flared neck guard like that.

Chances are it is a compelation of about 3 different styles. Historical? no, Historically based? yes.

Its a stretch, but you could say "loosly" based, the neck gaurd has a sassinad feel to it. and spengen construction is acceptable for late roman helms, more conical would be nice.

Yeah, that neck guard looks kinda "sallet-like" to me...seems to be a "Frankenhelm" of various periods.

Orc, I suggest ripping the cheek guards and neck guard... Then, getting an aventail for the back of it. It would make a nice 4th-5th-6th century Germanic spangenhelm, after that!

Greg - I had the idea of modding it when I bought it. Will have to see what it's like when it arrives, but for the price I can afford to play with it a bit. I'll bear your idea in mind.

I'm sure I've seen something like it or very like (a historical example I mean) - just can't remember where. Oh well. Only about $40 so no matter at the end of the day. Hey - I seen helmet stands go for almost what I paid for it! I reckon I'm on a good'un. The guy also has a sugar-loaf I think.

OK - it arrived this morning. I knew I probably wasn't getting a quality item - you get what you pay for (£21 - about $40 or less). So pics attached. The neck guard makes it impossible to look up where it is. Dome is one piece, spun I'd say, looking at the hole in the centre. Some kind of (chrome?) plate on exterior - that'll come off (best method?), looks like a zinc paint on interior, tatty faux leather liner (destined for trash) Stand is some kind of LOTR stand - wobbly, but repairable. Everything is rivetted to the dome. All appears to be about 18 guage. Rivetting is fairly loose so should be easy to dismantle "Frankenhelm".
Now - I am going to create something half-way decent out of this, even if it is a LARP/fantasy piece. I still feel with a little work there is a profit in this. The neck guard has a similar shape to the fin (cooling? ) on LOTR Uruk-hai helms. I've attached pics - so you can all laugh at my impetuousness and foolishness in buying this. Once you've finished let us rebuild it! We have the technology. I'm sure the esteemed members of this forum have the ideas as well. Look upon it as a challenge! I'm trying to raise money for a decent helm (not sure what I want, something about 450-600 AD probably, not sure why!). I reckon that this can be turned into something for the LARP market fairly easily. Thinling caps on guys & gals.

If you happen to still have this in a couple months when I have the money, I would love to buy it. Did you make it? (I would hope so...)

It's pure beauty compared to the sallet I wasted 15 bucks on. It looks like a nightmare. I should have asked for more pics before buying.

Hey Orc,

That thing looks worth $40 or so to me! If anything, I'd encourage you to take the neck-guard off. Even if you found a historic example to base it on, that particular guard still looks ugly! One option you could go with for the aventail would be to leave the cheek-pieces, and even drill some holes down the backside of them, and swing the aventail all of the way around, so that the entire back of the head is covered by the mail, all the way to the guards.

Very interesting piece, for sure! Modify it well, my friend!

Yeah - neck-piece BAD! Little round "nasal" rests on bridge of nose as well, digs in. A knock or blow to noggin could take yer snout off! Also when you do try to put your head back, or if it were pushed back, that grotty nasal-type thing digs in again. You'd be in more danger from your helm than the blow!.

Toying with a few ideas. Thanks for the suggestions. Got some mail so thats an option.
