So all good Norse re-enactors - would you like to see what Birka really looks like? In July you will be able to partake in a rather new event - The Viking Market at Adelsö. Adelsö is an island in the archipelago of Lake Mälaren, right next to Björkö - the island where the proto-urban settlement Birka was most probably located up untill ~AD 975.

This is the event's second year and if you happens to be in Scandinavia - or even better, the Stockholm-area - you ought to join us.
Please note that this is NOT a SCA event, SCA-dians are of cource welcome to partake, but please leave your palmtree weaponry at home. If you are interested you should contact Helena Mannerberth at info@vikingaveckan.se

More info can be found here: http://www.vikingaveckan.se/vikingaveckan/start-vv.html - most in Swedish but some in English and German.

See you there!

*!*!laughing**!

I think this looks awesome! What would I be expected to wear at The Viking Market at Adelsö - is this a public event?

Best,
Karl

Yes, it's a public event. Most viking-themed events in Sweden are - paying vistitors are shown various re-created goods and perid crafts, as well as camplife and steel fighting.
If you'd like to come I'd sugest well documented Norse garb based on late 10th century finds.

"Vikingaveckan" is one of these event that becommes what you make of them - if many devoted Norse re-enactors and LH-people show up it'll be smashing - if not, well lets hope that wont occur!

Hi Ny

I'm already comitted for this year, but given enough notice I might be able to make it in 2006.

While I know exactly what look the organsers are after, it doe seem a shame that they had to use a photo of local SCA folk in their gallery ...

Hi Peter

Nah - the SCA-dians were there allright, last year they had a medieval camp away from the market proper. It wasn't a great succes since the visitors were confused by the mix of "Vikings" and the generic 1361-warriors of SCA-Sweden.

Adelsö do have a medieval history though; while Björkö/Birka turned in to rural pastures Hovgården by Adelsö stayed a Royal mannor up until the 14th century - Sweden's Chivalry was actually formed there at the palace, Alsnö Hus in the late 13th century. The palace is right on top of the terrace were the great hall of Birka's kings was presumably located - since we can't just remove a ruin to find out, only the outer visible parts of the terrace have been excavated.
