The only negative thing I've heard about Ashdown, is that the work is extremely dated...many new theories and discoveries have come to light since it was first published...debunking some of what he's written. I believe Dan Howard still recomends it however.

No idea on the other one.

The second is modern artists drawings of 15th century pictures. They do a reasonable job of it. I am always in favour of going right to the source, but the fellow who wrote the section on horse-harness was a Polish cavalry officer with a ton of practical experience. It isn'tr a bad reference, if you keep in mind you are looking at someone elses interpretation of art.
