It is good for pictures, and a place to start. Stone wasn't an expert, just an interested party, from what I've heard. The best example I've heard is he was somewhere in the third world, and would hold up a knife, and say "What do you call this?", and they would say "a knife". Then he'd pick up another knife that might be a little different, and ask "What do you call this?" The name he wrote down in his book for it translates as "Another knife".
I wouldn't rely on it for extreme accuracy, as far as dates or anything, but it is worth having in your collection.
