Hi all,
somwhere i saw a reproduction kettle hat, except instead of the round skull it had a bascinet skull. is there any evidence for these in the 14th century? I know Cads site has one, but I'm looking for 14th century examples.
so I'm just looking for historical sources for a bascinet with a kettle hat of brim. also any illumination/drawings or reproductions of these that you have seen will help as well.
thanks,
Aaron

If you mean a kettle hat with a pointy top, yes. Late 14th century - quite a few here.
I also have a late C14 picture from Italy with a nice pointy kettle hat, which I can scan if you're interested.

It's not really armour if you haven't bled on it.

Here it is. If you have Arms and Armour of the Mediaeval Knight by Edge and Paddock, it's in there on p. 73 (a much better copy, by the way!). IIRC it's late 14th century.
There's someone who makes a "copy" of this helmet, but I have no idea how accurate or fightworthy it is. I can say, however, that there's no justification for the cheekguards he has on his version. If you look at the original, bad as it is, it's obvious that what he has on his cheeks is part of his coif, not plate cheekguards.
If you can get hold of a better copy, you can see if all those rivets at the join of the bowl and the brim are right. But my recollection is that they weren't there. I've lost my own copy of AAMK (curses!) or I'd be able to give you a better one.

Master Magnus/Adam at WMA sells a bascinet style kettle hat as a custom design. You can see past examples here:
