Annunciation Triptych Pouch - 1375-1400??

Post by Gregoire de Lyon »

The Annunciation Triptych pouch, as seen HERE is dated per the painting to circa 1425.

Do we have any evidence that simlar furniture would be used on pouches 50 or so years earlier?

Thanks,
Gregoire de Lyon

See http://www.larsdatter.com/pouches.htm for several examples of men wearing this particular shape of pouch, including several 14th century appearances.

But as to similar metal-mount "furniture" on this style of pouch -- the only other examples I've seen were also from the 15th century:There's several other 15th century pouches with fancy ornamentation on the surface of the pouch, or really ornate purse bars or purse frames -- but these are the closest to that Engelbrecht purse on the Mérode Altarpiece, I think!
