Silk Twill fabric sources

Post by Kenwrec Wulfe »

It was discussed sometime ago in a topic I had brought up about the types of silk that would be fit for late 14th cent/early 15th cent use.

The overall recommendation was a silk twill. I cannot find a decent source for silk twill fabric - I am looking for a fabric that has a weight 20mm - 30mm in a 100% silk with a twill weave.

I found one at 25mm for 56" fabric at 25$/yd ....

I would like to find something by which to compare it.

I have tried fabrics-store.com, denverfabrics.com, dharmatrading.com and a handful of others with no success....

Anyone able to offer up any links or resources?

Thanks!!

Not sure of the mm, but this has a good hand and weight. I think it would be great for dresses and if lined then a 14th c cote.

Try a sample to see how it feels to you.

The joy is that these are a great twill that is just a fabric, not a raw silk or open weave.

Holy Moly, Kim, that looks like the mother lode! You've handled the stuff yourself? It's not flimsy, gauzy stuff?

I did find that source as well, but I see nothing at all on what weight that fabric is. The fact that they dont list it concerns me.

BTW, thanks for a quick response! :D :D

Tasha,

Yes they are a great mid weight fabric. Strong and smooth. Not shiny, but if you just looked at them, they look like a nice fabric.

Good drape, floaty with some weight.

I just tried to tear the fabric at one of the edges, and i think i hurt my hands more than the fabric.

This is actually the first silk that I've seen that would make me think that historically they actually used silk. I know they did, but this is the first modern silk weave that I've liked.

I do believe its a great fabric and would be good for any historical use.

Wulfe - only because I'm holding a sample in my hand do I think its good. I was very skeptical, so I sampled it and am glad I did.

re: mm usage. Even the higher end fabric stores around here (G Street) do not always have the mm listed. For the most part they do, but not always.

The online fabric stores and other discount fabric stores just purchase groups of the fabric and do not always get the full details. If you have a question, i would recommend sampling the fabric. I think fashionfabricclub offers $5 shipping on their 1/8 yard samples. The last sample order I placed cost me $11 - money well spent I believe so that I can find out before spending a whole lot more on fabric that isn't right.

Good luck!

Having felt silk twill fabric before, and having it recommended to me, I knew that was what I wanted.

I sent them an email inquiring about the silk twill weight. I will let all know what I find when they respond. :)

If Kim says it's a good mid-weight, I'm going for it. Race you to the order form! :D

Order a sample to see, most online places have no clue what mm's are let alone how to measure for them. Thats our privledge when getting such a good discount.
