i know how to strap one

ie where to put my arm and all that junk


i was wondeing if anyone has any good period illustrations of the strap configurations for a strapped heater.

It's fairly small, about Manessa codex deminsions. I made it to have a more correct shield, so i figuered i'd probly better go with a more medieval strap configuration or else all the rest is a wast of time.

I looked through the Mac Bible and it seems almost ALLLLLL the shields are shown face forward!!!! :X

Though i do have a nice one of the guy with the shield guieged on his back.

Looking at Manessa codex now.

Oh and if the pics are Scottish/English/French that'd be even better.


Uggg i hate strapped on shields, but i have my reasons.

any chance to get a hold on Kohlmorgen's "Der mittelalterliche Reiterschild"? He shows the holes and strap leftovers on several extant shields from your period and also discusses various interpretations how these might relate to actual straps.

(Ok, it's a book in German. But with lots of pictures. I'd recommend it for anybody into proper shields for a 14th century display)

I have yet to buy it


I found 1 inside sheild shot in all my stuff and it was no help.

Though i do have abetter idea on where to put the guige now.

Here's what Kohlmorgen has in regards to "X" straps:

• Marburg shield no.2, around 1250 - K.s interpretation uses a X strap while Nickel's doesn't
• shield of W. von Liederbach, 1250-1300
• Weingarten shield, 1300

Please note: These are interpretations using x straps for the grip. There are other shields using this for the arm strap as well. Also, all of these are interpretations based on the nail holes and strap remnants, not extant complete straps.

Well, as I'm handling the book right now here's the list for the x straps for the arm strap as well:

• Von Stromberg shield, 1300
• von Welfenberg shield, 1300
• Marburg shield no. 3, around 1350

Yes, and it is what I use on my shields. Great control, lower profile, since you don't have a big handle sticking out, and when you tighten your grip on the two straps, it gets locked in place.

The heater with the Saintclaire Arms on it (cuz it ws black and white and had a wolf like my arms)



free handed da deamon wolf on it with pencil and then colored in sharpie before milk painting over him

then embattled the egde




and the back


also did the motto shield on the center grip


I had to completely re paint it the sharpie and tool dip just would not adhere to the epoxy appliance paint,

The strapped heater is lighter than air, and when you've got the guige on, it FLOATS... tres cool. Definitly going in this direction for my next one.
