Raiper Fighters --seeking info on "Frogs"--

Post by AEiric Orvender »

Raiper frogs I mean,
made often of leather hung from the belt and utilizing straped "belts" to secure the rapier scabard.

My google-fu and reasearch-fu is rather weak today so I need some information on the use of these "frogs" within the SCA(Rapier combat) Period.

Thank you for any help you might be able to offer.

Æiric

The item I'm attempting to reasearch is along these lines mut MUCH mor decroitive.

You may want to contact the guy who made this:

Todde mac Donnell has taught a class on the period construction of Elizabethan sword hangers. He's who I'd ask for the references.

if you can get a hold of a copy of Armi Bianche Italiane (sp?) - there are some examples of very decorative rapier/sidesword hangers and scabbards.

I've uploaded a couple hi-res color scans from the book (if you PM me an addy I can email the original resolution - its pretty huge). The rapier hanger buckle set that Historic Enterprises sells is very similar to the ones pictured.

Hope this helps

Some photo's of originals and high-quality reproductions:

http://picasaweb.google.com/Patrick.Gaul/SwordHangers#

Also, Arms and Armour has some nice (and pricey) reproductions available:

http://www.armor.com/rapier201.html

And Tattershall Arms carries the proper fittings:

Cheers!

I was glancing at the links provided by Gordon, and was struck by one,(As displayed at the Royal Armoury at Leeds, UK)
Image
I haven't seen a rapier worn with a harness before, most images are of unarmoured gentles for example, Image, Image in the second image they appear to be wearing doublets but not any hard armour.(possibly a jack of plates) so the top picture is the first visual documentation of a hard suit& rapier.

Sha-ul, the Leeds example is really a full-size sword. See the broad scabbard? Late-sixteenth swords did have a lot of rapier-esque features, even to a slenderness of blade outline, and sixteenth-century sword furniture looks like nothing else -- shapes that put you in mind of fine antique furniture. But Oakeshott tells us the 16th-c. sword of war could be distinguished from the civilian rapier by its feel: it was a full-on sword if it gives the impression you could cut a man's arm off with it. Rapiers don't feel like that.

Rapiers, of course, were cutting-edge style then, and a lot of sword carrying and decoration showed rapier features. Hence, this detail of the Leeds harness.
