Diamond Wars 2009: Online site booklet

Post by Paul the Small »

The year is 1242. The Mongols have swept through the lands, making many things their own in the process. Now Batu Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan, is ready to establish his capital at Saraj. Join the Golden Horde for a celebration of conquest, the horse, and the Golden Camp along the River Volga as the Turks and Mongols are united as the Tatar people.

(anouncer voice on)
Hey there kids, are you bummed out because there's nothing to fight in? Tired of the same old events with nothing cool to play in? Do you need something to use as barriers to slow down those pesky, invading Mongol Hordes?

Well, you're in luck! This year we are proud to introduce the Small Gray Bear Portable Fighting Structure (patent pending) to the Known World fighters. The Small Gray Bear Portable Fighting Structure (patent pending) is a fully modular fighting structure made of 8 pre constructed wall sections which can be carried to site and bolted together in almost any concievable pattern.

How strong is it, you ask? Strong enough to hold up all 265lbs of my fat a$$, even when the pressure treating was still a little "green."
Image

Is it tall enough, you ask? Well, at 7' to the top of the walls, it should be tall enough to keep all but the most vertically gifted from playing "Kilroy was here." (Brandr not included with product, Brandr is there for size reference only.)

Image

Yes but is it stable, you ask? With the major stress recieving corners reinforced with an 18" spike in the ground it is surprisingly stable.
Image

Image

Be the first kid on your block to fight in the Small Gray Bear Portable Fighting Structure (patent pending) and you'll be the envy of the shire.

Remember, for all of your fighting needs it's the Small Gray Bear Portable Fighting Structure (patent pending.)

More pics of construction and stuff are on photobucket
(this advertisement is not an endorsement of the SGBPFS, the Barony of Small Gray Bear, The SCA, NBA, NFL, NDAACP, NRA, or anything else with initials. It's just a silly, vain attempt to draw more fighters to Diamond Wars, and was not approved by anyone except me.)

No arrow slits, but we were knocking around the idea of making one panel with a 4' tall 3' wide gap in the boards. This way we could stack hay bales in it so the attacking army could remove the hay bales and make a sapper's tunnel... IF they can remove them all.

I have Columbus day off. Seriously, is anything going on Sunday?

I might make it if

a) I can carpool
b) something is going on Sunday

Like the modular walls, very nice.

Sorry, nothing going on Sunday except clean up and running people off site. You REALLY want to be off site on time at Diamond Wars, if you're not then the nekkid mole rat people come and pack for you. Seriously, it's not pretty. But maybe we can work something out if you find a ride in.

We're not sure yet. All we decided is that it would be way too cool to have the fights on the big dock at the lake. It's about 20'square, we plan on roping off the center (10' or so) and fixing tiki torches to the hand rails all the way around the fighting field. The only decisions about tourney rules we have finalized are short great weapons only and fitting in the light fighters somewhere.

Counted blows could be cool though...

Val,
I don't know if we'll have the sound system this year or not. I have to check into it. I think it rocks though.

Ingrid,
I know there is a guy in my household who is coming down from Chicago, don't know if he's driving or flying. Sent him an email to ask about car pool possabilities.

Spectators from Friday Night Fights will be on the bank of the lake. It's about 20' to the large area of the dock. You can still see the dock area well from there if the dock is clear of people.

If your household is coming and needs camping space, please contact the Land Agent, Mallory, at smokeslastspot@yahoo.com. Camps will only be reserved after 10 people have sent in paid reservations with a request for that camp. Reservations information can be found at http://www.smallgraybear.org.

To the equestrians of the Known World,

I had a rather lengthy discussion with the Kingdom Equestrian Officer last night regarding having horses at Diamond Wars. We have the facilities and the logistics worked out, but we do not, at this time, have the personnel to pull off equestrian activities at the event.

Currently we only have three Eq. Marshals in kingdom; one has a mandatory conference for work, one will be on a cruise, and the other will be unable to make it to site until Friday night and will only come if there are at least four horses on site. I need to know two things; one, are there any equestrians from out of kingdom who will be able to attend Diamond Wars with their horses, and two if there are any out of kingdom marshals who will be able to make the event on Thursday to “baby-sitâ€

Greetings unto the populace of Gleann Abhann. I am in charge of animal services at Diamond Wars. As some of you may know, this has been a "pet friendly" site in the past. Due to the number of people we are expecting, the nature of the various activities, and the presence of the coursing hounds, we are not allowing private pets on site for this event. The only animals allowed will be service animals, coursing hounds, and if we are able to arrange Equestrian activities; horses.

ALL animals will be required to present proof of vaccination and in the case of the theoretical horses, a negative Coggins and health papers. No animal will be allowed on site without these documents, this is a biosecurity measure and will not be taken lightly.

Any persons attempting to bring a private pet on site will be asked to take it home or find lodging elsewhere for it.

Any animal, including service animals, found wandering loose on site will be captured, its owner located, and they will be asked to secure the animal, if it is found again, the owners will be asked to remove the animal from site. This is purely a safety precaution, we cannot have animals running loose and possibly causing problems with other animals.

All animals, upon entering the site, will be issued a "site token" with space for the owner's name, cell phone number, and camping location on it.

We ask that those of you bringing service animals or coursing hounds please clean up after your animal. Or, alternatively, take them somewhere secluded and well away from camps and activities to "do their business". No one wants to step in anything nasty!

We want everyone to have a safe and pleasant War.

Please email any questions off list.

Thank you,

Yesterday we had a fighter practice in the park and set up the fort for a little test before Diamond Wars. We worked out a few bugs early in the day and everything went great. We had a little over a dozen fighters there so we got a fairly good test in. Here's a few pictures to whet your appitite before the big show. Enjoy.

After many long, hard fought battles I have to surrender. We will not be able to have equestrian activites at Diamond Wars this year.

I was unable to acquire the required number of participants to temp the only marshal in kingdom during the event to come. The only out of kingdom marshal I could line up is having a major surgery the week before, so would be unable to run the event. I have failed.

The only bright note is that we are having coursing hounds. Mistress Rebecca with the Greyhound is coming and bringing her coursing equipment and a two hounds. I have also heard from a couple other people who are bringing their hounds. If you want to bring coursing hounds, please email the animal agent, my lovely wife Lady Christiana Breakspear, at scaequestrian@yahoo.com.

Feel free to forward this to any groups who might be interested.. ..

The crew of the Good Ship Briar Rose invite all rapier fighters to join us
at Diamond Wars for...

PETE THE BOS'N'S PIRATICAL PLANK-WALKIN' BOOTY-LOOTIN' SHANTY-SINGIN'
HOLD-THE-DECK BOARDIN' PARTY RAPIER TOURNEY

Format: Bear Pit - Hold the field (which will be the decks of the good ship
Briar Rose) until you are beaten, then drink water & get back in line when
you are ready to fight some more. Fighting continues as long as people
want to fight, and marshalls are available...

The Basic rules:

1. Fighters may use any weapon or parry they're authorized for. Unusual
and nautical items are encouraged. Examples: belaying pin, cat o' nine
tails, boat hook, rope's end, marlin-spike, cross-staff, grappling hook,
harpoon, spyglass, ship-in-a-bottle, sea chest, boarding axe, scuttlebutt,
hook hand, astrolabe, pirate bandana, etc. If it's nautical and safe for
fencing, use it.

2. When a fighter is defeated he MUST give his weapons to the victor, and
the victor MUST use those weapons against his next opponent. If the victor
isn't authorized to use at least one of his opponent's weapons, he yields
the field to the next two fighters. You still have time to get any needed
authorizations. ...

3. Double kills are destructive; the next two fighters in line will take
the deck.

4. Queen's Blades, MoBsters, Dons, White Scarves, and equivalents, and all
past and present Queen's Rapier Champions, (henceforth referred to as QBetc)
must prove their worth by walking the plank. A floorboard from the
Captain's
Quarters will be laid on the ground next to the ship, just forward of the
main mast, to represent the plank. QBetc stands on the end of the plank,
unarmed, and begs for his life. Step off the plank and you're shark bait
(hoohaha). If the QBetc's shipmates (the other fighters) are moved to pity,
they may toss whatever weapons they choose to the QBetc. When the QBetc
catches a weapon or two without stepping off the plank, he must fight his
way onto the ship. If he wins, he can begin each succeeding fight on deck
just like everyone else.

Fighters who are not QBetc may choose to walk the plank and get a bonus
point if they succeed.

One point is awarded for every fight you participate in, as either fighter
or marshal.

One point is awarded for every win.

One bonus point is awarded the first time you win while win using a
different nautical parry or weapon. (Only 1 bonus point per parry/weapon;
if you beat people with a belaying pin all day long, you only get 1 bonus
point in the whole tournament. Win with the belaying pin and then win with
a hook hand, you'll get 2 bonus points.)

One bonus point is awarded for every nautical performance while fighting.
That can mean a sea shanty, sailorly exclamations, navy jokes, pirate
pick-up lines, etc. No repeating allowed, unless you know a verse of "What
Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor" that no one else has sung yet.

There is a grand prize for the highest point total, and other prizes for
whoever has the most points for using nautical weapons and whoever has the
most Shantyman points.

See you there!
