SOLD: Bascinet stainless steel.

I am putting my bascinet up for sale.
It was originally built by Duke Kelson. I have modified it somewhat replacing the visor hinge with one of Earl Brion's cast steel ones. I built the bargrill to more or less mirror the lines of the klapvisor and added vervelles to extend the aventail up the side of the face opening.
The liner currently in it will fit up to a 23" head I think, maybe a 23.5", I am 22.5 currently and it fits me a touch loosely. The lining is somewhat manky - but I will cut it out, wash it and stitch it back in before shipping.

$800 or best offer, shipping and insurance to lower 48 included.

Its a nice helemt, I even stuffed my fat head into it, it was tight but I got it on.

It is based on the SoFC design, and stitched in to holes drilled around the perimeter of the helmet. It is made up of .5" medium density foam which has great impact absorption, its not the standard blue sleeping pad foam. There is some terry cloth quilted over the foam on the inside and the whole thing is quilted into a cotton canvas liner, so there is no visible foam anywhere. There are four pie shaped pieces at the top of the liner with a hole for a cord which is used to adjust the height - tighter and it rides higher, which is nice when wearing the klapvisor. The chin strap is an under the jaw type with an a-historical roller buckle. I have found that the bottom of the bargrill has always grounded on my breastplate or gorget and the whole arrangement has been very comfortable in all situations.

Interior pics, the brownish bits are rust stains from a mushroom stake used briefly as a helmet stand (a dumb idea).

Edit #2: That appears to be Knutts welded maile? Is that included in the price of the helm or is it just the helm, w/ 2 visors and no maile?

Although if your committed to buying the pieces separately I can certainly accommodate you and would be willing to charge higher prices, although that wouldn't in the strictest sense be fair. But I am not above accepting charity.

My head size is 23.5 and I generally like a close fit. It has a nice high point for a mid 14th Cent portrayal. It has a beautiful houndskull visor. (love the occulars)

When my wife gets home we will talk and look at the checking account together. She's the one who told me to get a 2nd kit. She should have know this would happen. :twisted:

I don't have the money in the checkbook right now. I have a family vacation trip planned and it is consuming most of my liquid cash. I could go $400 this month and $400 after the 15th of next month. Sorry. Beautiful helm but best I can do.

I cannot recommend this bascinet enough. I have one of it's brothers and they are d@mn near bomb proof. Or maybe I should say, they're d@mn near Stefan von Dresden proof.* And the modifications that Thaddeus made, make it even sexier. Well worth the money.

* - This owner does not make the claim that SvD could not hit a bascinet of this manufacture, which has been proven false many, many times, or that SvD couldn't dent it if he really, really wanted to. However, after 6-7 years of almost weekly abuse, my bascinet has no dents.

Richard, I am selling this helmet to help fund a business start up. Also I mainly fight in my pot helm these days - so this hat sits on the shelf when it really ought to be on someones head.
I will make myself something more appropriate to the rest of my kit for the CoT next year.

The funny thing is I want this hat to build a Cot30 kit around and don't want to have to wait for a custom build. The sooner I can get into a new hat, the sooner I can dedicate my present one to a retrofit for a Rene Great Bascinet.
