This is finished with the oil and scrubby finish.
I think it blends it in and gives it a satin easy maintenance finish.
I also apply wax to retard acid finger prints.
And his sword.
I refinished and sharpened it ever so slightly.
Good enough for a zombie.
So what do ya think?
Am I still a hack?

Thank you Sir.
Problem is... I don't make custom helms anymore.
Your coif will be inside the helm box.
At your service.

Thanks guys.
I like crusader helms.
I don't know who made the sword.
However the scabbard is in bad need of oil and brass refinishing.
Plus, it does not have any belt buckle holes.
I have not touched the scabbard.
That was not on my job order.

Hal makes this style in a kit form too if you want to try it...a simplified version of this helm he could probably do too for you..he loves crusader and viking era.

Nice helm sir. I especially like the little flare at the top & the big ol knobby rivets around the browband. I agree about the scrubby & oil satin finish, very easy for maintenance.

OK, so you say... brass is fine, what's the difference?
Perhaps I can enlighten you.
Bronze has a rich golden glow that brass can not achieve.
The aged patina of bronze is more attractive than brass.
It is more forgiving during hammering.
It buffs to a higher sheen.
Did I mention it has a better color?

The reason we didn't go with a brass brow band...don't want people assumeing I am baron, royalty or a royal peer... there is something in just having a nice kit that looks like it should be in that period..sometimes..simplicity of lines say more than 2 more pounds of brass or bronze..don't get me wrong...there are some nice helms ..that have brasswork...its not me..

Yes Rannulf.
Your helm does not have any latten trim.
It is made to look right off the campaign.
Nothing fancy or polished.
A soldiers everyday helm.
May it serve you well.
Hal
PS: When you win crown, send it back for a latten embellishment.
And a matching queens cornett.

If it is God's plan for me...I am so blessed in so many ways. I feel like my life is finally coming together. I may never win a crown..but others that have will never know the love I have for my wife and children. And Hal over the years now I feel I have the added blessing of calling you and your wife "Friends"
Thanks

Thanks Ghostpig,
The helm and sword shipped out Fedex yesterday.
I hope all is well.
The sword went air, and the helm went ground... due to the package size.
Hal

Thanks Roland,
Adam,
He could be going to you next, as the helm might be too small.

As it turns out... I have failed my mission.
My client can not achieve the 1/2" minimum padding required.
The helm will be returned and I will tear up the check.
Oh well... another one for the creek.
At least the last big rain storm washed all the old stuff down to the lake.
Perhaps it is doing some good as a fish habitat.

When it comes back, I will take careful measurements and put it on the classifides.
I'm retiring from SCA helm making.
My shoulder and wrists asked me to.

Boo. I've seen guys like Thaden, Jiri Klepac and any number of others mess up on sizing a helmet and having to do it over! Don't give up because of a failure. Each success comes with a number of those, Hal. You do splendid work.

Ask mattmaus about helm sizing issues. He had a couple with me when I started in the SCA.
