UPDATE: HASTINGS XXXXI; 10/23-25

Post by Cap'n Atli »

Latest changes and updates are incorporated, rather than tread old ground on the old thread...

Markland’s 40th Anniversary

October 23, 24 & 25; Friday through Sunday

Location: King’s Landing Park, Calvert County, Maryland: http://www.calvertparks.org/Parks/Kings ... LPhome.htm

Public Admission: FREE

Participant Fee (to cover park fees and rentals): Full participant- $20, spouse(s) & older dependents- $10, dependent children or chattels under 18- free (Please note that $20 would have been about $3.49 in 1969.) IF we have enough participants, (over 100) we will lower the fee; therefore the site fee will be collected on site to provide maximum flexibility.

Medieval, modern, and cabin camping: $1.00 a night (to be paid to park).

Set-up begins Friday; modern and cabin camping on the hill behind the equestrian facility. (Horsemen have first choice, as well as families and folks with special needs.) There is also another modern and cabin camping area a few hundred yards away. Cabins have plank bunks (you need a sleeping bag) and each holds eight to ten bunks. There are fire rings and pits at each of the two camping sites.

Medieval camping and display area will be near the equestrian area.

LSCo members may also sleep aboard the Sae Hrafn, or under the Gyrfalcon. (Just get everything squared away in the morning!).

Merchants: Merchants will be considered participants; crafts, clothing, weaponry and food are acceptable in a medieval context. We’ll expect any participating merchants to set up a proper medieval display, and keep track of all tax and other regulations.

Alcohol Policy: Bone dry during all public hours; discretely wet (beer and wine; includes mead, of course) after closing hours. All “litterâ€

Reposted from the Markland bb:

"Greetings, all!

I've been in contact with Lothar concerning our present finances, and I've also spoken with Atli. Markland will make a blanket donation which will in turn lower the site fee for all members of Markland who attend, regardless of how many members enter the gate.

Whereas the cost had been $20 a head, the cost for current members of Markland will now be $10. In addition, the cost for spouses, partners, significant others, flings and ex's (in short, those who share family membership in the Markland database) will now be $5. Children up to the age of 18 are free. A teenager who wishes to prove to a given parental counterpart that he or she is not a "child" is welcome to do so for a donation of $10. Returning members of Markland whose membership is not current are invited to renew at our current membership rates, lower as they are than in years past, and enjoy the full site fee discount at this event. The same offer is warmly extended to new members who join on site as well, though all participants are welcome to forgo membership and instead pay $20 per head. (And to our playfully wizened Marklandic population, free entrance hinges on calendar years...not degrees of maturity). "

So, any Markland members coming out of the woodwork can now come in for $10 and even bring a S.O. for $5.

Longship and faering and power boat are ready to go. We shove off Wednesday, for a one or two day trip up the beautiful Patuxent. Anybody want to come along for the ride?

Then again, we have a return voyage Monday and Tuesday.

Ut!

Finished a new kite shield, working on a round shield but not sure it will get done. Hmm, better haul out all my clothes and check for gaping holes!

Of course, if I really AM coming down with the flu, I'll be very put out. Or I'll show up wth a bell around my neck as a leper...

Janet and I are definately coming. God knows when we'll get there, though.

The park will be locked by the time we get there. Are there any convenient parking lots around where we can spend the night (small motor home).

Terry:

There is a small parking area/bus turnaround (for school busses) just outside the gate; and you can walk around the gate.

Janet and I had a GREAT time and the traffic coming back was much, much, MUCH better than the traffic going down.

It was great to see everyone! Especially you, Bruce.

And we have copies of Beowabbit for sale, if anyone in New England would like one. $5.00.

Many thanks to Atli and everyone else who made this event possible. We had a great time, and even got a couple recruits!

I'm glad everyone had a good time, but please note: I let it slide this instance, and I probably shouldn't have, but any announcements about Hastings- or 1066-related events that are blatantly pro-Saxon will be deleted and the original poster will be put on double-secret probation.

Pro-norse posts in reference to the northern invasion(s) will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Stinking Normans.

When Janet and I realized that one of the History Channel movie tie in documentaries had used the Longship Company's ship to illustrate the Norman Invasion, we decided LSCo should have charged the production company more money!

On the other hand, down with Harald Hardrada!

ULTRAGOTHA, are you one of the women I chatted with for some time on Sunday? If so, nice to meet you in person! I didn't make the connection, then.

(Mom to the two little boys in the nasal helms.)
Do you not know that in the service... one must always choose the lesser of two weevils?

Yes, that was me! The one in the reddish viking apron and yellow Hedeby hood.

THANK YOU

Well, no major injuries, nobody drowned, minimal damage to the naval assets (except for the outboard beneath two fathoms of water), all the horses are home and happy.

By Viking standards the event was fully successful.

The park staff was most cooperative, and would even like to see us again, nobody got locked in or out, and the hot showers were an unplanned luxury.

I would like to thank all of the folks who expressed an interest in, and all of those new and old Marklanders and old Skraelings who actually made it to, the event. It was good to see the crew up to the old mischief, and willing to help out.

My thanks to Drey, Devon and friend for supplying the cavalry and working with the Horse Guild to open-up other possibilities.

My thanks to Sean, who kept track of all the funding for Markland and Alix for the Longship Company; and to Stroganoff and Alix for the propaganda table and flyers; and to the Witan of Markland, and the Board of the Longship Company, for voting financial backup in case of hurricanes and/or Swine Plague.

To Ceecy, and Wilhelm and Mary, and Chris, and Andrea for the old times; and Terry and Janet for the new times.

To Matthew for continued encouragement.

To Leonard for soldiering on despite the logistical problems and risks.

To Adrian and Craig for the Hrafnvik Herelith Viking camp and for helping with the extra gear, above and beyond the call.

My special thanks, and continuing gratitude to Howard and Marc, for their valiant attempt to get us upriver, and their continuing logistical and organizational support throughout the entire event, with extra hands, signage, and equipment.

I’m sure I’ve left somebody out, so y’all can chime in if I’ve missed anybody who deserves further note.

All of you have my appreciation and gratitude. We’ll have to try this again in 40 years!

;-)
