Counted Blows - Have I got this right?

Post by Rhyance »

So as it turns out I may be free for this coming weekend at Aston Tor, Calontir. If I can get there it would be a return to the field after at least fifteen years. I don't count that combat social club at Calontir Twelfth Night a few years ago - a stage is not a field.

But what is this "Due Passares da Tre Conti Battuta Giostra (two passes of three counted blows tournament)?" Does that mean that the object is to get my opponent to acknowledge three telling blows before he can do the same to me, and nobody falls down?

We didn't have counted blows tourneys in Caid in the previous century. Or if we did we counted to one.

I appreciate the help.

Looks like 2 passes, so a reset after the first 3 unless I miss my guess.

Kind of like a fight with your average rhino... it takes 3 to get him to call one

Welcome back, too. This is my first year back after a 10 year break... have fun man!

Check with Marshal in charge of the event.

I've been to "Counted Blows Tourneys" that were actually best 3 out of 5 first blood matches. Three hits wins, but each strike was a separate bout.

It was quite confusing when I kept throwing shots after hitting the other guy and the marshal started yelling hold.

I've also been to counted blows tourneys where they used touch kills. The other fighter turtled up under a shield and threw a series of shots I could have blown off with no armour at all by flicking her wrist a lot while I was maneuvering for a "good shot. I lost.

Check with the marshal in charge, don't make assumptions like I did.

So...I'd assumed the best time to land shots "two" and "three" is while his eyes are uncrossing from "one." But maybe instead the rule is that a good blow stops the action, like (ick!) sport fencing. Hmmm.

And thanks for the welcome back, Eiric!

I like to say "Three telling blows, continuous action" or "Three telling blows, with pauses" in order to not mess people up.

When the whole three telling blow fashion began, some people did it one way and some the other. I prefer continuous action, but for some it's hard not to stop for any "good" blow.

To me,
"Three telling blows, with pauses"
is simply 3 matches to first blood.

Rhyance, that is a fine looking shield.

Where did you get the shield boss?

Thank you both! I got the boss from Strawberry Fields Armory - a very nice guy with whom I wouldn't hesitate to do more business.

If you're interested, here's a thread that I started about the construction of the shield:

no wishing to derail this thread, but I'm curious if there are any Crown Tourneys out there that have been done in "counted blows" format?
If yes, how was the different style of tourney received by the populace and fighters?
If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great.
