I had a great time standing in the Pas du dragon noir this year. I met many wonderful folks who also seemed to have a good time. There seemed to be an interest in having more historical styled combat at Pennsic, so in order meet that demand, and make authentic combat more readily available at Pennsic, I came up with this.


The Historical Combat Series Pennsic XXXI

In the interest of providing a venue for those who wish to focus on more authentic forms of tourney, melee, and combat in the SCA setting we offer the Historical Combat Series. Each day for 13 days from Monday August 5, 2002 through Saturday, August 17, 2002 the Historical Combat Series will offer at least one opportunity to explore some aspect of medieval combat in a more in depth manner then is possible in typical SCA armoured combat, whether it be in format, appearance, or technique.

Counted Blow Melee’s – Counted blows Tourneys are becoming more and more common, now counted blow melee’s are on the rise. A variety of different rules sets will be used during a series melee combats. 3 or 5 blow combats, armour as worn, are examples of the different scenarios that will be used.

I33 Sword and Buckler Tourney - Fight in a tourney inspired by the earliest known European fighting manual http://www.thehaca.com/i33/I33.htm . Bring your favorite buckler and a cross hilted sword, or use one of the sets provided.

Plate and Mail Tourney – Tourney and Authentic Appearance Competition. You are judged by the harness in which you fight. The person who does the best in both competitions wins the prize

The Combat of the 30 - Recreate the famous encounter between the French and the English during the 100 years war. This will be a counted blow melee. If more than 60 attend, the 60 whose harness most closely resemble that of 1350’s era England and France, will be selected for the first round. Subsequent melees will allow all who attend to participate. (Lord Theodore of Haddington contributed basic idea for this melee).

Pas du Dragon Noir – A 15th Century Burgundian Passage of Arms in the style of Jaques de Lalaing’s pas “The Fountain of Tears.

Obviously I haven’t filled up all 13 days yet, although the Pas du Dragon Noir can be done over several days. I’m looking for more ideas and folks willing to help out, as well as just general comments, I realize many of my ideas are a little rough. This is a big undertaking, so I thought I would get started early.

I will need marshals, prizes, judges, weapons etc.

As, are you still considering the judicial duels or are they out since they are not a tourney style?

Hey guys glad to here some folks are interested.

Bela, I don't know of a source for buying I33 sorry.

Vitus, I generally start spending 2-6 hours a day on the battlefield the first Tuesday of what used to be set up week, and continue for the rest of the war. I’m trying to provide a forum for those interested in more period combat. I’m hoping folks will step forward and say “I’d like to run X which is highlighting period practice Yâ€
