Attention Meridean Chivalry/ Royal Peers (you too!)

Post by Rev. George »

In 2 other threads it's been mentioned that Fair Meridies has no Masters of Arms. (we also havent signed the whitescarf treaty) Its been Implied/said that this is because the chivalry/royalty want it that way.

Any insight to this? I mean if it's super secret "round table" stuff, that's cool, but inquiring minds want to know.

Well, I can't speak for Meridies but I have been told the tale of why there are not any MoA's in Trimaris and probably never will be.

Basically, At the first crown lyst of our new kingdom, the gentle who placed second was an old knight who would probably never have a chance at the crown again. The winner was a rather young gentle. The old knight was angry that he lost and refused to swear fealty requesting to be an MoA instead.

The knights were somewhat jaded to the idea of MoA's after a poor experience with our first request for the order.

I am sure there was aready some bit of displeasure for the order before this event that came from our being part of Meridies before that.

I would tend to think the guy who refused was just being a prick. probably of the type that has little faith/ respect in the young. I mean seriously, if you can win crown (or almost) in april, dont you think that you could do it again in october?
or was he scheduled for amputation in august?

You know it is funny but that same young guy, his household and supporters (from what I understand with good reason) back in 95(I think) broke their chains of feility to the king it was kind of a bad situation all the way around since that "young guy" is very well respected.

Rev. - He was basically getting on in years and from what I hear encountering physical problems. This was basically his last chance at a crown.

Lost Scott -Yeah, I am in the young guy's household. It was more than him and his household and I think it was a good reason.

Jagatei,

It really was just him and his household, albiet his extended household. He was the only one who actually renounced his peerage and sent the letter to make it official. Others joined him but no others sent the letter.

He was reknighted. He is a KSCA. No, reason to get Wyman all worried.

Greetings!

While it is true that Meridies has never created a Master of Arms, it doesn't have anything to do with some secret design of the Chivalry. It has a lot to do with the culture of the South and Meridies. If you go to any Court, you will note that most people in Meridies swear fealty to the Crown. Not just the Knights (who are expected to), or the Laurels or Pelicans (who are expected to in Meridies, at least), but a good portion of the populace who have no other reason than they want to. Also, I think the romantic ideals from the tales of chivalry are very much still alive and kicking in the South and you grow up _wanting_ to be a Knight in Shining Armor.

It's important to note that, although the Chivalry discuss and recommend candidates, it is the Crown who ultimately decides to give the accolade.

Also, a quick plug, if there is someone who _you_ think is deserving of being a member of the Chivalry, please write a recommendation letter and send it to the Secretary for the Chivalry. We really do read them, and they do help us.

I hope that answered your question!

Cairbre mac Siomaigh
(Secretary for the Chivalry of Meridies)

The White Scarf Treaty has to do with recognition of rapier awards, so it doesn't affect the KSCA/MSCA distinction.

Does Meridies have 'Dons'? (White Scarfers?)

Just curious.

BTW - back in Midrealm history, a similar occasion arose. The out-going king requested of his heir that he be permitted to be a "knight errant" for duration of the heir's reign. Not understanding what that, the heir said, "Yeah, sure.", and was deeply bent when he discovered that the out-going King meant, "Do I have your permission to avoid you for the duration of your reign so I don't have to swear fealty to you, you little twit?"

It was a long time ago, and I don't think it's ever been invoked since. Mostly, if someone has real problems with the seated Royalty, they avoid them for the duration. It's only 6 months.

That's a big NO. The reason I tossed it in was that its another fighting award that isnt available. (to be honest, we may have dons, as don is an approved alternate knighthood title, but that's neither here or there)
I was discussing it at an informal dinner, and It was obvious that several people fell into the "drunken street thugs" idea/ propaganda of rapier fighting...
