Riding Slit in Maille

Post by Cisco »

Hey guys, I'm trying to figure out how high to put the riding slit in a maille hauberk.

I'm assuming both front and back should be to the same height, yes?

It seems that the pictures (contemporary pictures) have two heights in them. Most I've seen show the slits at just below crotch height. The rest seem to be at just below belt height.

Is there a height that was used historically (I'd guess just below crotch height to protect oneself) and/or is there just of a mobility benefit (or any other benefit) to one over the other?
