Greetings,

I don't think you could to that(as fun as it would be) because striking with a shield isn't permited. Others will be able to answer better, but in my understanding you can't do it.

A more specific answer is "it isn't allowed in the SCA."

If you want to try it in another group, I can't speak for their rules. I don't think it'd work particularily well, myself.

I fought spear and greatsword with a buckler in my left hand for melees when I lived in the Outlands. Mainly for blocking arrows and as an extra layer of protection for when my hands got whacked. Many kingdoms will not allow you to grasp a weapon and a shield in the same hand, and of course you can't use a shield as a weapon without approval from the Earl Marshall, and no weapon can have the pokey directly in line with the wrist. So the thrusty on a buckler is right out.

It has been allowed in the East in the past... not sure about now though. I fought with one for a while... I thought it was pretty silly, and not all that effective. And if you do use one... put a blade edge on the thing... if it's just a thrusting tip, you will be in for a surprise when someone grabs the haft of it and starts throwing you around by your shield.

from the SCA's Marshalls handbook

D. A shield may be used to displace, deflect, or immobilize an opponent’s shield or weapon, so long as such use does not endanger the safety of the combatants. Deliberately striking an opponent’s head, limbs, or body with a shield is forbidden, unless that shield is designed for use
as a weapon, and is approved by the Kingdom Marshallate.

You can have an "attack" shield, but you need to get approval from the Kingdom EM.

I can see it now... a shield made of woven rattan. 1.25" rattan.

"ummm mr. marshall, so why is it not legal?"

Dare I mention it...........madu. Center grip like a buckler, but with thrusting tips on both ends. But, then again, It wouldn't work for most personas. They are fun to play with though.
