with the newton's cradle there is always the problem of getting sqished by at least two of the 1/2 ton balls :twisted:

though anyone stupid enough to get in the way wont reproduce, so good for the rest of the world!

the weight I gave earlier was worked out by a friend who is cleverer than me, maybe he got it wrong :wink:

I would rather take the word of those here, and thank you for the working out ( and 276 kg is at least a little easier to manage, my van would just about be able to carry three of the four im getting ).

4/3*pi*r^3 for r=16/2 = 2144 in^3 @.283lbs/in^3 = 607lbs each. (276kg)

when I get them I will post a few pix and I will make a nice pedestal for one soon

can do a lot bigger than that, I know where there is a 24" diameter hollow steel ball that I could fill with lead for dishing or maybe use the end from a LPG tanker ( about 7 foot diameter ) also filled with lead.

the hollow ball I am saving to make into a huge cauldron in the spring.

waiting now to hear when they may get delivered and looking for a suitable base.
then we will find out who really wants one of these.
at least at 276 kg they will not be so hard to move or load onto a vehicle, I have a stacker truck that goes to 300kg so may be able to lift the ball but not the ball on its pedestal probably.
have thought of a good way of lifting them but will wait till they arrive before making it up in case the size is wrong.

and now a few serious questions for the metal bashers here ( and that includes those in other countries that it would cost a fortune to ship to):

as well as the monster balls about 16" diameter there will be smaller ones, all hard and polished and very round like 6, 8, 10 or 12"

which sizes of these would be most wanted by you?
if I was to make up a pedestal with a 16" ( or other size ) ball on it for raising, planishing or anything else what would be the ideal height for the TOP of it to be?
will take the average of the heights to make the prototype and then will either do more the same or do custom heights if requested

it may only be worthwhile due to cost to think about buying if you are local but the info from anyone here would be of help to me in selling these

delivery of the 16" 8" and 6" balls should be in 11 or 12 days.
need to make lots of room and get all my friends round to get them in the workshop.
