Roman 12 or 14 Gauge SCA Legal Helmet

Hey,

Im new to the SCA and Im looking for a good Roman style helmet to do heavy fighting, but I dont want to spend a big amount of money. If possible, Id like to spend no more than $100. Can anyone help me out?

Spending less than 100$, and being picky about.. anything.. can be rough.

You might be better off to buy a starter bascinet with no bells or whistles, and make sure you like getting hit first. There are several folks here who can do it cheap, and get you protected. Not many will do anythign custom for that low a price.

Another option is to pick up a kit from Zweihammer. You save money, but pay it back in work. It allows you to tune the helm to your head, and get a custom fit.

I will admit that finding something good that cheap would be hard and a bit ridiculous.

I've been to the CLANG Armory website and they make excellent looking roman helms but they are expensive (About $800 to $1500). I plan on hopefully getting one from there the beginning of next year.

So, i would like to try to find one cheap that looks roman to fight in for now. I am willing to spend more than $100. Im just trying not to spend too much so that I can get the Clang Armory helm next year.

Honestly, if you are saving for a CLANG helm then just buy a sturdy Ashcraft Baker helm to hold you over. They are ugly as sin, but you can usually get your money back out of them once you upgrade.

I was trying to do that, but i've heard that some people have ordered them from Ashcraft, but not received them, so now im not sure about it..

I've got to agree... Since you are new to the game, I would advise on not worrying too much on the "period kit" so much as to getting out there and making sure you're going to like it. I've seen ,in my experience, people spending money on a great looking kit just to either not really like fighting or changing their minds on their persona. Get a kit that provides good protection and worry about the "upgrade" later... Just saying....

Thanks for the advice, but ive actually been out fighting and I love it. Ive constructed my own full roman kit already, and the only thing im missing is the helm..

Man...if you want cheap I'd just pick up any used helmet you can get. I'd stay away from Ashcraft Baker helms if you can. I would bet you could buy a used helm from someone for the price of a new AB one.

Personally I'd do what I could to get that helmet at a HELL of a nice price...really is a steal if it fits and you want to do Roman.

You could try a 'WTB used helm for under $125' or something similar thread.

I'd send you to Hjalmr but unfortunately he's closing up shop and not taking any new orders until he reopens.

Right hand side, second helm down. $275. You could take your Roman cohort and fight, say, a nuclear power- the helm would be fine....

Or get the $135 Munitions Bascinet and upgrade later, selling the helm for within $20 of what you paid for it.....

Okay, so what you are saying is, you've been on the field enough to know what fighting hardsuit is like, decided you like it, and have decided on your final kit.

You are therefor shopping for a helm, know what your Ultimate Helm is going to be, but want a cheap placeholder for now until you can put money down on your dream helm.

The placeholder you would prefer is a roman styled, and you are opening your bidding/shopping budget at $100, but willing to go up if you find something in the right ballpark for design and price.

Not criticizing, just summing up to see if I understand the situation correctly, and hopefully condensing the discussion a bit to be helpful.

Contact http://horsefriendarmory.com/ and he will make you something that will be sturdy and get you out on the field. It will be a bit more than $100 but it will be worth the extra bucks and allow you to start fighting while you save for the helm you want.

Go with ironmonger if you need a solid $100 helm. His munition's grade bascinet's are practically bomb-proof, and will be a sturdy backup for you for a looonnnnggg time.
