VikingLeather / Westland Shoe Review

Post by Swete »

I purchased a pair of 2 toggle shoes in golden brown with the thick sole option from Viking Leather Crafts, and I must say that I am very pleased. The seller was quick to reply to my questions. The shipping was freakishly quick (I ordered on a Wednesday evening and received them Friday afternoon, from halfway across the US!).

The craftsmanship on the shoes is very well done. The heavy leather sole is firm, yet pliable, and the uppers are flexible to movement, yet they remain snug ensuring a comfortable and confident fit. They are comfortable for hours of use and I felt confident that my feet would find sure purchase. Note: The sizing given on the Viking Leather site translates well into regular measurements, meaning no guesswork.

The coloration and quality of leather are suburb. I have found no blemishes in the leather or flaws in the stitching and the dye is even and full of luster.

The cost, including shipping, is amazing as well. This factor is what had kept me from obtaining period shoes for quite a while. But thanks to the wonderful pricing, I was able to finally complete this vital portion of my Dark Ages portrayal.

The only negative I have is that, after wearing these shoes for at least 17 hours straight (trip to and from renfair), with cotton socks, the stitch running across the top of the foot began to chafe my little toes a bit. However, this should be easily fixed with a softening pad or a bandaid.

Overall, I would definitely recommend Viking Leather Crafts as a excellent place to shop for Dark Ages shoes.

A pic of my shoes after a full 17-ish hours of trip to and from the Texas ren-fair with a good many hours wandering about in between.

Is this just a matter of another piece of leather sewn/glued/etc to the bottom of the shoe?

Glued and nailed. The turnshoes have a thick sole as well, just not as noticeable with the turnshoe style.
