Anywhere from Byzantium, to Persian, to Scandinavian, even Huns, the Heruli were Migratory so I have a lot to choose from.

Persia/Byzantium to Scandinavia is a BIG area to cover?

A simple wall tent would work - Rome used 'em (heck, so useful they are STILL used).

Probably could use a wedge tent - I'm pretty sure they were in use in Ireland around that time, and if you are portraying someone who traveled a lot, would be easier to use and transport.

I'd go with whatever the Roman army was using, since the Heruli were Roman foederati. But I don't know the sources for this - do we have any evidence of 5th c Roman tents?

The Huns most likely used a form of Yurt and probably a tent built on top of a wagon.
Far earlier, the Scythian wagon-top tents were round domed, far later, the Kipchak wagon-top tents were center pointed. Hunnic ones? Don't know.

In the 9th centruy, the Scandinavians built timber baracks as soon as they landed even temporarily (based on Ibn Fadlan). It is plausible that they did the same earlier on.

$230 bucks. I own one and I love it. HUGE inside for such as small tent. With internal frame there are no lines and it fits carport fittings for high peak shades. I added Greek Architectural features (Acroteria) to mine to enhance the Greek feel...

Look for the "Small Wall Tent" about halfway down. Not Roman, but less modern in shape:

Panther Primitives has a couple Roman designs starting about $350.

The sky makes an excellent covering for almost any period.

You left out "get a tent". Seeing as how in the SCA all are technically minor nobles, shouldn't be a problem with a tent.

But either way, I'll choose farby for fun and not regretting my hobbies, Alex ;)

Yeah, I'd rather see a sea of Civil War era wall tents at an SCA event than land pimples.

Living History Reenactors can command a higher level authenticity than the SCA can.

No, any of the three take care of that; I've farbed out many times, but I'm always honest with myself when I do so.

But either way, I'll choose farby for fun and not regretting my hobbies, Alex

See? He gets it.

Me too... that way, they won't be at the Civil War event! :P
