When was soap invented?

Post by fghthty545y »

I've heard soap was invented in ancient times. I've also heard that soap was invented in the middle ages, and that the Romans bathed with bath oil, not soap.
Has anyone seen documentation for when soap as we think of it appeared?

A reasonable place to start (with the usual encyclopedia & wiki caveats):

Soap has been arround since someone accidentally dripped some fat onto the ashes of the cooking fire.
