Kolben tourney helm?

Post by Baron Alcyoneus »

I'm looking for a picture of one. A friend went to The Met and took a number of pictures of armor for me. There is a helmet in The Met that has the bargrill design etched on its visor in that pattern, and I wanted to show her the "original".

I'm particularly interested in the type that has the wire woven into the grill, and twisted.

OK, there is an (IMHO ugly) version of the diving bell great bascinet at the Met that has cars and wire of decreasing size to make the face protection. There are 1-2 great bascinets with 'spaghetti strainer' pierced visors. Finally there is a closed helm with a 'wrap plate' and the wrap-plate is etched with a bar-grill picture. It MAY even be covering an actual bar-grill but is probably meant to stylistically mirror an exchange visor.

Close Helmet for the Tourney
Etched Steel
Attributed to Kolman Helmschmid
(1471-1532)
German (Ausberg), about 1515-20

The visor is fitted with an unusual reinforce, which suggests that the helmet wqas originally part of a garniture.

The last 2 letters are blurry reading from my cell-phone. I have some mediocre images of all of these. Which do you want?

These, I think. The last one may be the one she showed me.

I've got a photo of one that I'd not seen before. I'll try to post it tonight when I get home from work.

Whenever the legislators endeavor to take away and destroy the property of the people, or to reduce them to slavery under arbitrary power, they put themselves into a state of war with the people, who are thereupon absolved from any further obedience
