Tanged javelins?

For those of us who wish to talk about the many styles and facets of recreating Medieval armed combat.

Tanged javelins?

Post by Saverio »

Hey everyone, I have a bit of an odd question about javelins. Has anyone ever seen evidence of tanged javelins from the Iron Age or the early Middle Ages (European)? I've seen plenty of line drawings of socketed javelins, but none with a simple tang.

Thanks

Yes, found in Viking and A-S contexts, and (I think) Celtic. Not common, but there. I'll dig around, but first I have to dig up the boot drawings like I promised one of you.

(Just blew in tonight from Seattle.)

Well, Iron Age is a pretty big time span. There are three basic styles of pilum from Roman finds, as I understand it. One is socketed and the other two are tanged. And they were certainly made of iron.
