Clackers...

Post by D. Sebastian »

http://www.sca.org/officers/marshal/doc ... ndbook.pdf
VII. WEAPONS STANDARDS
B. Single-Handed Weapons
3. If the weapon has a head, it shall not be constructed of solely rigid materials. The head shall be firmly and securely attached to the haft. The head shall allow at least a 1⁄2 inch (12.7 mm) of progressive give between the striking surface and the weapon haft.

So, 3/4" foam between a formed axe head and a piece of rattan:

Target <- rattan|3/4" foam|axehead|haft

Would be legal.
Correct?

As long as you can get the foam to compress with pressure on the head 1/2" and not bottom out? Yes.

It is SCA legal, but it was my understanding that clackers were not legal in the EK.

I have just looked and can't find that restriction anywhere.... Need to look into this.

It is probably something that must be specifically permitted rather than specifically prohibited.

Dunno about the EK reg, but as far as Society is oncerned, as long as the head contains materials which are not *all* rigid (emphasis mine) and the head *as a whole* will compress appropriately, you are fine. I use clackers in the head of all my axes, maces, etc...

It is not forbidden in The East. I have been using them for years on my Dane axes.

Olaf,

I was thinking of you (and Syr Kennric) when I was making this thing.
It's pretty!

Glad to hear it. Either my reading comprehension sucked, or I listened to the wrong people when I got here...

Now I can get back to my plans for the perfect 'war mace'.

Looking forward to seeing this. Love axes and maces, ever since I used one at Pennsic. Just wish more people recognized that they can still hit well without the rattan snap.

Olaf, do you use the clacker on a two handed Dane axe? I've been constantly told it can only be on a one handed axe and my Dane axe has to only be padding. Thanks.

Alric, I believe these rules apply for you (emphasis is my own):
http://www.midrealm.org/marshal/handbook/armoredcombat/Midrealm_Armored_Combat_Handbook_v11.0.pdf wrote:MIDDLE KINGDOM ADDITIONS TO SOCIETY WEAPON STANDARDS

B. MASS WEAPONS INCLUDE MACES, AXES, AND WAR HAMMERS.
1. Padding: Mass weapons must be padded with at least ½ inch of flexible closed-cell foam, or its
equivalent, along any striking surface. EXCEPTION #1: Pre-molded "Rathbone" or other similarly
approved axe heads do not require padding along the striking surface. EXCEPTION #2: 7.5 foot
polearms may be unpadded.
2. Clicker mace and axe
Clicker mace and axe striking surfaces may use split rattan, heater hose, or strips of rubber or leather as
clickers. A minimum of ½ inch of closed cell foam must separate the haft rattan and the clicker. The
clicker must start at least 1 inch below the head of the weapon, and stop 1 inch above the bottom of the
head, and constructed such that the edges of the piece of clicker cannot come in contact with the
opponent being struck. A clicker must be 1¼ inches wide, with a minimum space of 1 inch between
clickers. A clicker must not extend more than ½ inch into a legal faceplate opening.
3. All maces are strictly single-handed weapons. Under no circumstances may any sort of clicker be
introduced into a two handed weapons.

4. A single-handed mass weapon may not exceed 48 inches in length. Any mass weapon longer than 48
inches is considered to be a polearm and covered by those standards.

I'm in the East... it's legal. Though this thread seems to be stirring up discussion as to whether it should be. :)

I've "discussed" it until blue in the face to no avail. I can only hope with talk of different materials that the subject will come up again.

I believe this, however, is legal in Midrealm:

You just have to leave that bottom bit attached.

Alric, have you considered either cutting your danish axe down to four feet or fighting with a bardiche?

I have a 4 foot axe that I use in singles, but for te sacrifice in defense I want to stay with my 6 foot for melees. I've thought about just doing the glaive thing and calling it a boar spear or cutting spear but I don't think the axe should be handicapped the waybit is and want to keep up the good fight for axe rights.......

No, laminated is legal too, thus my bardiche suggestion.

Wish I could say it was mine, but it is just something I found on the forum.
