Opinions on Archery

For those of us who wish to talk about the many styles and facets of recreating Medieval armed combat.

Do you think what I'd like to do is feasible?

Yeah! It sounds awesome!

Sure, it could work. ...But only if you worked REAL HARD for it.

Hmmm... ...I dunno... ...But if it does, I won't want to be on the other side of the battlefield...

Nah... ...The SCA's too melee based... It'll never get off the ground...

No. It couldn't work. You'll never get the men you need to break a massed charge.

It'll never work, you Honorless cur! Fight like a man, not a coward! Face me for REAL!

Robin Hood was a criminal and a vigilante. That's pretty much the case no matter which story you read about him. Oh yeah he is also fiction.

Doing it safely I won't argue with, but when you say do it "honorably", you're basically saying "don't do it at all", since you yourself claim that archery is inherently dishonorable, thus by definition impossible to do honorably.

Yes, RH was a criminal, but so were many other folk heros. Also, I'm aware that he's fiction (or mostly so), which is the reason for my "both senses of the word" for legendary comment.

You can be all upset about it if you want to man. I said to follow Hughs advice.
Fair enough, maybe from reading many of your previous posts, it colored my perception of this post more than was really there.

Hemet. 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. Westin Park, Hemet.

Those 2 are the most active in the area right now. There are other practices but they're in O.C., Burbank, and out by LAX (I think)

Thank you Ciaran! I'll do what I can to get out there after Estrella!
May you have a good day, and many victories.

Do it.

Have fun.

Be as safe as you can.

Have fun.

Be concious of the "fun" factor for everyone (shoot into different areas, switch side for a battle if one side has NO CA, etc.)

Look GOOD. Add to the spectacle, don't detract from it.

Have fun.

Listen to the marshals.

Accept that some people are going to complain if you shoot them once. Tough to be them. BUT, don't shoot the same guy over and over if you can help it.

Listen to your commander.

Have fun.

.

XD Okay, Thank you. I plan on having fun with whatever I ultimately decide on doing on the field!

If you are in the far southern areas of Dreiburgen, some of the North San Diego county practices might be close to you. This is an announcement group for any North San Diego County practices:

Cool! Where are the practices held? I live right near where the 15 and 215 meet, so I might be close enough.

One is in North Vista/Bonsal area (Gopher Canyon exit) and one is in East Oceanside at the YMCA off Mesa. If you sign up for reminder egroup, they have the specific directions and locations. From the 215 and 15 split, you are about 1/2 hr away from the North Vista practice and 35 minutes from the O'side practice.

Honestly, this and the previous post are the Singlemost middle of the road, evenhanded CA thread response I have ever heard from the Count. Seriously. you couldn't ask for a more fair response.

Clearly he's getting old and weak.

In a year or two, he may buy a bow....

LOL, now you're just talking crazy. In all fairness though you're right, his response really wasn't nearly what I'm used to from other threads, I guess I jumped the gun a bit.

Aaron wrote:I love the idea of volley fire.

Back row stands up, second row takes a knee and first row is prone. That might be fun to see.

But I'd like them to be a hedgehog of spears too so I'd have to have crossbow volley fires and then everyone pick up their spear that rests next to them or is somehow sticking straight up.

That would be neat.

Aaron, I think you're following a musketry paradigm there at the bolded part. Crossbows w/o pavise-men? Because for sure nobody is going to shoot -- not fire! think about it -- a longbow prone.

As you're imagining, pikemen could in theory crosstrain with crossbow, though two radically different sorts of arms to schlepp crosscountry will give real trouble, pike-drill being the two-handed matter it is, and crossbows not being tiny nor slim. I think you might as well have a couple of dedicated squads for the crossbows, operating with a pike company. That way your pikes are not having to pile their crossbows at a rendezvous point in order to maneuver with their great clumsy stickers.
