I understand that there are some that believe that Master Magnus is no longer making armour. THEIR LOSS....
Master Magnus is still making some of the sweetest, strongest, nicest stuff out there.
So let me review the helmet I recently got from him and the transaction in general.
The helmet is extraordinarily well made. Solid, balanced and well finished. The design and execution are superb and Master Magnus seems to combine a keen artistic eye with superb technical skills.
The piece is interesting at several levels. It is NOT easy to make a nice looking helmet of the conical, Spangen type for SCA purposes, as the grille and etc. are substantially against the nature of the originals. Master Magnus has solved the problem elegantly and without diminishing from the wearability or protection.
The fit is uncanny. After padding the helmet according to the instructions I received from Magnus, the helmet passed the marshal face-push test before it was even strapped. Once strapped it simply becomes part of your head, like a sting is part of a scorpion.
The commercial communications part of the transaction was excellent. Master Magnus assigns you a slot in his queue and shortly before he starts your piece he lets you know you are next. In my experience he was very open to discussing a custom feature, which for me was a change to my helmet to fit the Bayeux Tapestry style as close as possible.
Once the piece was finished (not long after he told me my turn was up on the list) and then delivered, he followed up with good advise as to padding and strapping, making sure that I was happy. (happy? Extatic is more appropriate)
This is a full 5 all along the Freiman Scale. And that is because Freiman did not allow for a 6.
You simply cannot go wrong with White Mountain Armoury.
See you guys at the Battle of Hastings at Pennsic.
