Gauging interest in hand embroidered items. What do you want

Post by ChloetheEvenhardt »

Just what it says! I really enjoy doing hand embroidery and I'd like to start selling my wares. I'm a member of the SCA so I really like historical work, especially of the heraldic nature. What would you be interested in? What about colors or fabrics? I would love some feedback on this so I can start doing things that people will want. Thanks! I'm currently working on my first set of embroidered cuffs. A special request of heraldic roses and knotwork. I'll post images throughout the process to my flickr.

I have always thought that people could make money selling surcoats in the different kingdoms colors with the kingdom Populace symbol embroidered on the bottom. Maybe one on each bottom panel of the surcoat.

My shield guard my home
and my sword deliver mercy unto my foes.

Ah. Herein lies the problem for me. I can embroider and sew by hand. Surcoats require immense amounts of work from what I can see. Perhaps I can look into them a bit more though. Thanks!

I am very interested in your work! I would love more information on the Byzantine coif. I would be interested in finding out a price for you to do favors as well, on ribbon preferably. Please send me more information on your pricing and turnaround.

Thank you!

Which coif are you calling Byzatine? (I asks because I like Byzantium, but I'm not sure which one I did that resembles it, :( )
I will PM you with some pricing info and turn around shortly, thanks!

Heh, are you referring to the coif I'm making for a local fighter with the double headed eagle on it?

An eagle counterchanged blue and white down the middle? On what kind of fabric? My plain linen coifs are $35.00, and embroidery work goes from a very minimal charge and up depending on the amount and size, etc.

Pricing is kinda iffy when it comes to embroidery. It's very dependent upon the size and complexity of the piece as well as the materials. If you'd like an idea of pricing, reply here or PM me. The more detail you can give me the better. A picture of the design or something similar will help me immensely.

I'd also like to mention that I LOVE to barter! If you need something or want something and would like to trade with me please let me know. I'm a new heavy fighter and need some armor, I love bags and belts for SCA purposes, I have an 11 year old son and my boyfriend (who's also a heavy fighter) has an 8 year old daughter. His parents are also in the SCA. So basically any wares or armor or the like would be most excellent!
The two things I'm *really* interested in right now are a lobster tail gorget (I have a pic of one I'm in love with) and wooden or other material drinking containers of the tankard style. So even if you're not sure let me know, we may be able to work something out!

I would certainly consider it! I'm a sucker for a pretty dress. Or things that look good on my Lord or our children.

I'm in the market for my arms embroidered as patches, and have some various armor and garb and stuff to trade. I'll send you a PM when I'm not running out the door to pick up my kid from daycare. :)

Woot! Goodness I love trading! I definetly love the idea of doing trades for armor. I just need to be cautious about trading a lot because I do this for a living. I can't trade everything at once, but I'm willing to do a few trades a month.

Chloe,

On that surcote idea.. even if you don't sew the surcote itself.. you can still make populace badges.. as a sew on patch.. people would still love it where they can sew them on where ever they wish.

Thanks a lot! I really like these suggestions. I've been considering doing cuffs on a regular basis and posting them when they're done. I might consider doing keyhole pieces for shirts too.
Sound good? What's a good price range for cuffs and the shirt pieces?

So here's the deal. I'll do some custom work, especially with the people who have already contacted me. After that I think I'll do a custom piece or two a month, five or take, otherwise I'm going to do some "stock" kind of stuff. I'm going to look at a few things as possibilities.

Populace badges for the Kingdoms
Cuffs that will range in designs (what would you suggest?)
Maybe some other style of badges or patches (ideas?)
Some collars or the like
Random bits of other stuffs

Sound good?

I think collars and cuffs people can put on their own clothes will sell like hotcakes.

Awesome, thank you!
Well, when these roses are done for an archiver what should I do next?
Heraldic roses (and if so, red, white, or...?), fleur de lis, or Celtic knotwork?

I decided to do a set of Celtic knots in a trifoil design. It's done on 100% wool in cornsilk (a nice neutral and natural color) with the knots done in a deep but vibrant copper and a deep green. I'll post them for sale when they are completed. These are cuffs. I started them last night.
