Ebay armor

Post by knoch »

I was looking around Ebay and I found this set of armor. It looks like it would be good for a starter. I would get a new set of leg's though. Item # 1172900840

I don't like to try to buy armor from people who don't know what it is because often (not always) it's stolen and I don't want to be an accessory (morally or ethically) to something that heinous. MY armor was stolen. I KNOW HOW IT FEELS. I'd be pissed off even more if I knew someone was using it and I saw it.

I don't know. The seller has 193 positive reviews on Ebay. It's hard to imagine that somone with so many sales on Ebay is fencing stolen goods, but it is possible. Seems like a very public place to sell stolen goods, though.

I bought a very nice set of armour off of Ebay - a basinet with interchangeable klapvisor and bargrill, a set of full gauntlets, and a stainless steel aventail:

The email address was "Central Pawn" or something like that. It's possible that someone hawked their own armour for money. It's also possible that it was stolen and sold to this pawn shop, who then sold it on Ebay. It was obvious that the armour had never been used - the helm was not padded nor strapped.

What is one to do? Assume that all decent armour that shows up on Ebay must be stolen?

No, but be prepared for someone to come up to you one day and say "Hey! You're wearing the armour that was stolen out of my car!" and what are you going to do? You're standing there wearing someone else's filched gear. The seller, from his feedback record, is very likely not the thief if the armour is indeed stolen (he might've picked it up at a flea market for all we know), but this is definitely one of those caveat emptor situations. One might question the seller before placing a bid about where he or she obtained it.

Funny. I read the description of the auction (which has now been ended, by the way) and didn't get the impression that these were stolen goods. I did get the impression that this guy obviously didn't fight in the armour or know much about it. There are a hundred ways he could have obtained this armour legally.

Let's not let our unfounded suspicions cloud our reason.

The paranoia over this suit of armour and the flood of emails asking if it was stolen was probably what convinced the guy to stop the auction.

Besides, if you were to steal armour, wouldn't you steal nice armour?

This auction was probably sent out on a few SCA branch mailing lists, perhaps Lord soandso got in touch to say that was his stolen armour.

Guess we'll never know. I like those splinted leather bazubans, neat.

When I posted this I was doing my daily search for armor on Ebay. I don't think it is stolen though. I do think that at may be a very eairly harness though. look at the legs and arm rigs. these will not pass to days stndered's for saftey here in the west. I thought it might be good as starter armor though with some help from someone who knows armor (like a local knight). Allthough I do like that helm I up there. if you ever want to sell it I would be interested. Do you use it?
