Due to the loss of my fingertip [it's okay now, I'm working again] and being on disability [2/3 of a no-overime paycheck, no armor income at all] for two months, I'm seriously broke. So I'm offering a deal to folks prepared to wait even longer than usual.

I'm offering 25% off the list prices on my page. Deliveries will be no sooner than mid-2002. 10% rebate for missed delivery times will apply only to the outstanding balance at time of completion [in other words, don't pay it all up front]. 1/3 down, to the nearest $5.

Would this discount be aplicable on large orders? Say, a Henry VIII list harness? With the bulk discount and the %25 off, it would come to $6,000... but I wouldn't want exactly that harness.

To fit my period (1510 Italian) and taste, I'd want to make some adjustments to the kit. I'd want an anime like on Norman's site, a milanese barbute (Y-slot), gauntlets like Darkheart's Munition Gaunts, and exchangable demi-gauntlets. (As well as any changes required to give it a more Italian look&feel, according to your whim)

What would this kit cost (I figure it'll work out to about the same, since the helmet is so much simpler)? What would it cost to blacken everything? I don't want crosses anywhere on anything.

The bulk discount doesn't apply to a single harness. The reason why is that there isn't the same sort of "assembly line" sort of operation I can use in the production of a batch of spaulders/elbow cops/whatever.
So...The discounted Henry harness would run $7500 [still a hell of a deal, IMO].
Anyway...the Barbute seems a little OOP [I'd go with a Burgeonet, with an anime breast], but if that's what you want, cool. The gauntlets are no problem, at all. I'd do that at a discounted price of $6500.
If you're willing to forgo the fully enclosed elbows, knees, and butt, You could have it for $5000.
Both prices include a dark finish, because the armor comes back from the heat-treater that way

Just got my first paycheck from my new job... tax is taking 40% of my income!!! (I was figuring on 30% or so...) Guess I'll have to forego the fully enclosed elbows, knees, and butt... though I really want that butt protection...
Actually, come to think of it, I really don't need the sabatons. Could I trade the sabatons for the fully enclosed butt (I'll be able to tell people to "kiss my shiny metal ass"!)?

I know the barbute is a few (ok, 50) years OOP, but I hate almost all other late period helms. (especially burgeonets)

I can get the down payment together in about a month (clearing this with the Lady will be the hard part). If you're really strapped right now, I can send you a bit of it if its refundable up until the point that I've paid the entire down payment (though I wouldn't expect the refund for a few months).

Actually, since I won't have the fully enclosed elbows, I should probably think about huge removable couters the Italians were so fond of... how much would those be extra?

Also, I'm going to be making my gambesson soon... I guess I'll go ahead and design it to fit this suit. Do you have any resources that I should look at in particular for this?

Y'know...without the fully enclosed parts, it's actually a fairly plain harness. It won't require near the precision, and wouldn't be any harder to do than a more typical Milanese harness. So that'd reduce the cost more substantially than I first said.

So...a *similar* harness [essentially Milanese harness with some tweaks], with an enclosed butt [just realize sitting or squatting will be both difficult and uncomfortable - that suit is made for standing combat only] would only run you $3000, including the sabatons. Drop the sabs: $2900. Drop the steel butt, too: $2400.

As to the arming coat...I don't have any particular sources myself, but I'm someone on the Archive has a few links.

I am strapped right now [argh!], and the partial/refundable option is doable.

Will kneeling be uncomfortable, too? (I'm pretty bad about protecting my legs... I'm used to jumping over people's blades) Will I be able to sit on my haunches? When you say forego the full enclosures, do you mean simply removing the compression articulation, or more than that? I'd just want the compression joints taken out.

I'm tempted to get a tonlet, but that'd make leg shots REALLY hard to calibrate, it'd dent easily (well, as easily as tempered spring steel can dent), and kneeling even harder...

Have you noticed that the armpits are also fully enclosed?

By forego, I meant remove. Frankly, I had completely forgotten about the armpits, and I don't have any good pics of how they are enclosed. More compression articulations? Yikes. The prices I've mentioned apply to not having fully enclosed armpis, as well.

I think kneeling itself wouldn't be a problem as long as you stayed pretty much upright. Setting back on your calves wouldn't be much fun, though. I may be underestimating the capabilities of the harness. I'm guessing from the pics in "The Armorer & His Craft", and that steel butt may move better than I think. But the thigh muscles bunch up pretty thick when you kneel, and the lower part of the steel shorts wrap the thighs all the way and lock in place...and it looks like they're made to fit "unbunched" thighs. Ow.

Assuming I'm correct, a tonlet would actually be better for kneeling, as long as it was horizontal bands instead of a rigid skirt like Henry's "engraved suit" with the cut-out for horseback use. The bands would collapse vertically, so it wouldn't restrict much. You'd have to judge leg shots from sound alone, and it would present a large, large target.

So...I think for the $2400 ~ $3000 I mentioned above, you'd have a harness that would look very like the historical suit [at least until you put the helm on] but the lower you go on the price scale, the more practical it would be in the SCA list. If your arming coat is made with mail gussets at the elbows and armpits, it'll look especially good.

For a brief period of time I had a sallet with bevor. I couldn't look up or cock my head to one side with out exposing my face. How well does the integral bevor work and just as importantly how much does it restrict movement of the head. When you move the head does the whole bevor move (including the neck/collarbone protection.) This is a big factor with me and I hope you can explain the mechanics of this helm to me.

The type I make is essentially a sallet-shaped close helm. The bevor is mounted to the helm at the same points that the visor is, and pivots up and down. The articulations of the lower section of the bevor allow you to tilt your head back and turn to the side without exposing anything. You can't move your head completely freely, but there is a good range of motion, far more than you *need* in SCA fighting, at least. At 90 degrees [45 to each side] each way.

Plate VIII in the Armourer and His Craft shows the armpit... but hits to that tiny opening that the compression articulation covers is so rare, I'm really not going to worry about it.

For the thighs, would it be possible to put a locking pin into a slot so as I kneel, the leg expands? The steel should be springy enough to do that, right?

I actually recently got a byrnie in trade with the intent of ripping it apart for gussets and an aventail on my spangenhelm.

I can't remember now what style the sabatons were... I'd like the toes to look like modern boot toes... I hate pointed and square toes...

So it looks like my order will be: The suit with an anime, fully enclosed butt, no compression joints on the elbows, knees, or armpits, "Munition Gauntlets" like those from Darkheart armoury and demigaunts to match the kit, with sabatons (just for kicks*) and a Y-slot milanese barbute.

You're right, it is, and that's an excellent solution to the problem. The slot won't even be visible on casula inspection.

Henry had "bear paws" on his. "Modern" toes it is.
