Can anyone give me a good (cheap) source of horns, esp. large steer horns?

Don't worry, I (probably) won't put them on a helm.

Anyone ever looking for a horn should bookmark this site. You can get horns that hold 2 ounces of liquid or 2 gallons of liquid. Other horns available too.

I bought a few small horns at Pennsic. They were raw but without the core, about 1' long. I sanded the first one smooth, using 80 & 120 on the belt sander and then 220, 320, 400 wet sand in the kitchen sink. A quick trip to the buffing wheel resulted in a beautiful shiney horn. I still need to clean out the inside before it will be ready to drink from, but I was impressed with how easy it was to go from a really ugly, raw horn to a thing of beauty.

So, now that I am hooked, I would like to try my hand at making some larger drinking horns. I am thinking in the 2' and larger range. One project I have in mind is to make a nice set of matching drinking horns with engravings on them as a wedding gift.
Other things I would like to try is to make some other objects from horn (spoons, combs, etc.).

I read somewhere online that horns are real cheap if you can get them from the slaughterhouse or something. One guy complained that the price had just gone up - to $1 per horn! So, does anyone (especially you guys in cattle country) know a source for cheap, raw horns? I am interested in both large drinking type ones and also thick shelled ones for carving & making stuff from.

Unless you live near a meat processor, they are resonably priced even for the pre-sanded variety.

(And a lot of people thought Tandy Leather was completely gone.)

The place I used to get them from was in Fort Worth, TX. They used to be $0.50 per horn for up to 10" horns. They went up to $1 last year at the Houston rodeo. I got a bag of them, but lost the merchant info. I'm sure they'll be back out this Feb. I can probably find out who they are before then, but it might take a little work.
