Looking for bladesmith: decorative sword inquiry

Post by Kendrick le Oggesfot »

Hello members. I have a friend that may be interested in commissioning a custom decorative sword for his business. It does not need to be functional or pretty, quite the opposite. He's looking for something distressed, much like a movie prop. It's a pirate cutlass, but with a blade more similar to a scimitar. My original idea for him was to purchase a couple wallhangers and swap/retrofit the furniture to make it look like his design but we can't find exactly what he wants. I know there are a few different ways this could be made, I'm curious what people can offer. I don't know his budget, but I imagine it's not enough to have a "REAL" nice custom piece though I'll relay any info to him....You never know.

Here's a rough drawing of what he's looking for:

Here's the complete logo (for now he's just looking for the sword but if anyone can build the whole thing, I'll pass it along to him):

I'm just looking to get him some rough estimates as to cost & time for now so he can figure out what he wants to do.

Thanks for looking 8)

Might be out of his price range, but here is a Jody Sampson Martian longsword on SFI - looks dead on to me

I have opinions of my own- strong opinions- but I don't always agree with them.

You might want to try listing this on My Armoury. I think there is alot more people that do custom work over there.

Kendrick,

There is simply no way a Bladesmith isn't going to charge an arm and a leg for what he wants.

My suggestion is to start with this http://budk.com/Swords/Cas-Hanwei-Scimitar

Its the only one readily available that isn't a stainless blade, thus allowing for it to be distressed and modified with some power tools.

Here's a cheap steel saber guard http://www.amazon.com/Sabre-Guard-Practice/dp/B0006B4K2C

It will need modification to work but should get him close.

If he purchased those items and dropped them in my lap, I'd still charge him around $500.

Awesome! Thanks Patternweld. We've found a sword which has the perfect blade shape but not the guard. This one is perfect! I'll pass the link on to him. Thanks again. :D

MAke it from wood and give it a proper paint job. Will work well for the logo of that nature.

I think his mind is set on a metal sword but I'll certainly pass that on to him. Thanks!
