12th century Spain
ferrum ferro acuitur et homo exacuit faciem amici sui
Re: 12th century Spain
Wow. Beautiful! I love the serpent biting the shield. Actually sort of cute... and the first one looks frikkin' painful! Lance to the FACE!
Also... is this definitely 12th century?
The helms are interesting. They are conical... though I can't really make out if they have visors or not!

Per the photographer:
Example from the Chapter House at Ribas de Campos (Palencia), 1170-1210:Juan Sanchez wrote:This particular shot is from gallery in the church in Rebolledo de la Torre, in the northwest of the province of Burgos.
Attributed to Juan de Piasca, the church is thought to have been consacrated by the year 1186.

Church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Spoleto, Italy showing the murder of Becket, 1175-1180: Monreale Cathedral, Sicily, 1189-1200:

The St. Justina helm is c. 1210:

Timm Radt has provided a good number of images of these masked Spanish helmets. Some seem to extend down the back as well. A peculiar set from the Church of St. Mary Magdelene, Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena (Tudela), c.1160-1210.

The first example seems to have an ear-hole and an occularia. The second example has several bumps on the nasal. Some literary source mention carbuncles, red stones, being set on the nasal, while other Spanish sources show the mail drawn to a point over the nasal. So might this be a hook, as seen on some conical helms?
