What's not seen on the reproduction are two buckles, slightly smaller than those on the front closure. These are located at the edge of the leather near the armpit, about even with the center of the lowest scale. The tounges open upward. These appear in Thordeman Plates 131 & 132 as #131 on the left and #415 on the right. Thordeman's reconstruction in Fig. 387 shows the large buckle covered by leather and the smaller buckle holding down the edge of this flap near the arm, but I am unconvinced.
Any suggestions as to what these two buckles might be for?
Aventail straps??? Or is there a better suggestion?
