seeking advice for SCA heavy pavise

Post by Silvester »

I'm kicking around the idea of making a pavise for SCA heavy combat.

Some things I am curious/concerned about are:
- I'm used to a standard heater, but I've used a kite in the past... The pavise seems to be some where in the middle of a lot of protection with a lot of blind spot...
- I'm used to a standard heater strapping style, almost all pavises I have seen are either center grip or strapped with the arm along the gutter for horse back (this seems to negate the extra protection with useless weight when on foot).
- I'm not big on aluminum shields for a number of reasons (leaning more toward recreation than sport fighting being a big one), but an aluminum pavise seems like it would hold up better to SCA combat and would definitely be easier to make and use.
- How would one make a wooden pavise that would have a chance of surviving SCA combat for even a season...? I have some ideas about layering 1/8 plywood/paneling with cut outs to create the gutter and bridging it as well... Or I have seen some modern pavises coming from eastern Europe that have a couple cross braces on what looks like a scutum blank with a ridge glued on the face...

On top of that, not sure how well a pavise will be received as part of my learning process...

I would seek out the advice of Nicholas Cochiolo and the reason I mention him is I know he makes them and he fights with one from the photos I have seen.

Check out his FB page here. Real nice gent.

Cheers and good luck.

I just found him on Facebook before checking in here and sent him a message there.

I saw the website of a gentle who I believe is in the north end of the East that made a hand pavise for fencing and heavy and e-mailed him last night... His was slats screwed to a formed metal band and then wrapped in glue saturated hemp cord.

I was thinking of layering 1/8" plywood or wall paneling like this - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =1&theater

The gnet from the east you are talkign about might be Woodwose here on the archive. I know he made a hand pavise for fencing.
