The SCA needs all the talent and members it can get. According to the post from CTrumbore on our dearest Max in the Off Topic section of AA, things with our little club are worse than I imagined.

Duke Logan is a man, fallible and flawed; he's not a God. I don't find fault with him if he doesn't remember to be aware of most people's feelings or desires. I doubt he takes to the field with the goal of soaring over people, crushing hopes and dreams in his wake. I appreciate his and others gumption for taking on the mantle of leadership. This and your and others participation keep the SCA wheels turning.

Surely this difference can be smoothed out. At least I hope so. I dunno--just my two-cents.

But you can't expect people to give a damn about you, if you don't give a damn about them. That's why I stopped caring. I wore myself out trying to care and got shit on over and over, and eventually, lying to myself that I was having fun continuing to do that got old.

sorry about that, let me try to clarify.

so I joined the sca some time ago. I loved the competition of our sport combat. I thought it was awesome and I thought it was something that provided everything in a true combat sport that I wanted. I quit boxing after 12 years because it is a crooked pile of steaming shit financial machine. I craved real competition. I found this sca thing and four years later I entered my ducal reign. woo hoo! I won a couple of more tourneys!!! the title meant nothing to me, still doesn't.

but all of a sudden my words carried some weird weight. I was told that I had to be careful of what I said because I was a "duke". I was asked by a woman who prepared some food for some event to give her my "professional opinion" since I have a degree in culinary arts. I told her that her food was mostly overcooked and under seasoned. I found out later that I "ruined her sca experience", that I was "a belligerent asshat who felt no shame in crushing someone", etc etc and blah blah blah. I would have fired her from my kitchen in the real world based on the horrid food she served to paying customers. but I won two tourneys and somehow that changed the world. she asked me for my professional opinion and I was disgustingly nice. but somehow I was the bad guy.

now we have faceplant and the internet. now it seems to be ok for folks to attack their betters (and by that I mean simply folks who have accomplished more than their attackers). and that is cool. that is acceptable. but holy shit if someone with any kind of sca title fires back........

it would be neat if it went both ways. anyone being an ass should be called out and held up as an ass regardless of title or station. the internet sca does not permit that. in fact it supports the opposite. its brave for someone who has been to two sca events in five years to attack a duke but holy hell if the duke fires back he is a pompous ass and his reputation is what he has earned.

I'm a laurel. If I'm asked my opinion on something, I make damned sure that my response is made in the best way possible. I make damned sure that they are really asking for constructive criticism, and not just that they look pretty. I've been in this game long enough to know that 90% of people asking me that question want to be told that they look pretty. And yes, the laurels have a reputation for being big old meanies. But if I find out that *I* specifically have a reputation for being a big ol' meanie, I'm going to try to figure out why. Does whining about it and blaming other people for it help? Would blaming other people for my reputation be very responsible?

I'll bet if you polled a bunch of newcomers, or even just non-peers, you'd find that most of them felt that running their mouth would be political suicide. Listen to what people say. There's a definite perception that anybody who expresses an unpopular opinion will never be a peer.

You may feel like you're victimized because you're a duke, but seriously, think about the position you're in, and maybe listen to other people and their concerns. They probably feel "victimized" and powerless. You're no more a victim than anybody else in the SCA. Do you *really* think that people who are willing to go off on you publicly haven't earned their own reputation? Do you imagine that CTrumbore doesn't have a reputation of sorts? Do you think that *I* don't have a reputation?

ETA: Re-reading this later, I realize that it sounds more... challenging... than I intended it to be. It's too late and I've had too long of a day to figure out how to rewrite it at the moment, maybe I'll try tomorrow. But this is the TL;DR takeaway... A peer shouldn't be surprised when his or her words are taken to have more weight. We're peers. I also don't think that *anybody* in the SCA gets a free pass to be an asshole.

Charlotte is right. I made the mistake of publicly questioning a sitting King's decision to present only a certain type of "presentable" art during court. Oh, my! The shit-storm that came about from that! I am a professional artist and was defending the wider world of creativity by questioning the Crown's Word, which did indeed become Law. I had many Laurel's approach me privately and with whispered voice cheer my public stand. Privately, mind you. As for the Laurel's that responded publicly, their message was clear: "You have questioned the King and will never be considered a worthy candidate for our Order."

SCA suicide. I happens. It happened to me. I have since moved on and found life to be wonderfully full and exciting outside of the SCA.
