My brother wants to buy an entire new rig

Post by freiman the minstrel »

My brother Benjamin Willhoite (ska Redrick Morninglory of Clan Teaglach) has moved into a new job. He was working as the low guy on the construction crew in Hattiesburg, Miss. He is the new Network Administrator at Livorno (my spelling) DOD high school in Italy. This is a radical change in social status and income. He is still a litle giddy.

He just got his TQSA reimbursment, and wants to graduate out of newbie armor.

He would like to donate every single bit of his old "get 'em on the field" armor to the loaner locker, and trade up.

He wants gear that looks good, but not flashy for SCA combat. He does not want to "pay for polishing". I am assuming that this means well made, well fitting munitions grade gear. He would like to take delivery before Gulf Wars of 2004 (March).

He needs a helmet, and he wants to have a breastplate. I don't know why he wants a breastplate for SCA combat, but he does. My guess on the hard top is a bascinet with a bar grille. Visibility is an issue. Please paint the bar grille flat black before you ship it, because he will certainly forget to. He has a large sized head.

He is less concerned about historical accuracy than fit and appearance. I, personally, would like to avoid being responsible for putting another "mixed bag" fighter on the field.

I am guessing a grand for hard kit, with the gambeson, arming cap and tabard being a separate story altogether.

I am looking for custom fabricated rig, strapped but not punched or fitted.

This is my real life, biological brother.

yours in service,
freiman the minstrel

I often have customers who dont want to pay for polish, but some degree of polish is needed.
If you want to surface a piece of armour, that is take it to a belt sander to remove plannishing marks you have to have some degree of polish. Its needed to remove the "grain" from the belt sander.
Ive had customers tell me they want a piece from me but dont want to pay for the polish.
I use the absolute minimum amount of polish needed to get an even appearing surface.
Polish is not always about a level of shine. Its often about blending the scratches in the surface to make it appear even.

I have passed on the URL for this particular thread, and I have forewarded the specific e-mails to my brother.

I can't wait to see what he decides.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Freiman,

A recommendation to pass on:

Instead of trading in his whole get-'em'-on-the-field kit for munitions grade kit, in my opinion, he is better off trading a piece at a time for a NICE kit.

For instance, spend the dough on a NICE helmet. It is the most visible and hardest to hide piece anyway. Then save the bucks and go for NICE body armor. Work your way through the kit.

Most armour, properly maintained, lasts a long, long time. At the end, he will have a kit he will be proud of, rather than a munitions grade kit he will probably want to trade up out of anyway.

Just my 0.02 from 23 years hard knocks experience and wishing I had done differently.

Your Excellency Bri,

I agree with your advice. I think that he so concerned about trading up quickly because his current rig is flawed in two important ways.

1) it was made by a newbie minstrel fifteen years ago, in a mad attempt to put himself on the field. and

2) Fifteen years ago the minstrel was considerably taller and thinner (skinnier) than he is now.

It is entirely possible that no single portion of his current rig is safe on him. I know that that particualr rig was famous for it's ugliness.

thanks again guys! That Helmet's sweeeeeeeeet!

Hey! How much does he want for it, and what sized head would it fit?

The helm is 28.5" interior circumference at brown line. The entire helm < minus the brass > is SS including the Drape. The drape is Butted Mail NOT rivited. He paid $800 for it 2 years ago and has seen zero combat. Not even padded.

If intereseted, contact me off list and I will get you in touch with the person who owns it.
