I just got this helmet 1 month ago from Forge of Svan, and it broke my heart. This helmet is magnificent and truly built to last, but it is just BARELY out of specs to be SCA legal. The eye slot near the nose is too wide and the 1 inch dowel gauge slides in if it is put in at a down angle. This is NOT Svan’s fault, as his website doesn’t specify that these helms are SCA legal, but it is what it is, and it needs to be modified to be used for SCA heavy combat. I decommissioned the Hospitaller armor kit that this helmet was ordered for, and so don’t need the helmet anymore, and I want to sell it to someone who will put it into the field and use it.
A little about the helmet:
26.5 inch inner diameter. 14 gauge mild steel with a satin finish. Comes with its own bag.
This helmet is pretty awesome, chins strap is already installed and it is double layered 14 gauge in all the corner/edge areas that are most likely to get hit, and triple thick on the crown edge around the top. It’s really a beautiful piece of work. It’s sized big because I originally intended to put a leather suspension liner on it and wear padding and a real chain coif on my head and just strap the helmet on, kinda like they did back in the old days…
As stated above, it is NOT currently SCA legal.
The (recommended) modification to fix it should pretty easy:
1. grind off 4 rivets holding each side ocular cross piece.
2. take those two pieces off, lay them down on some 14 gauge metal and re-pattern off them with narrower eye slots near the nose (just draw the angle wider on the bottom or the top).
3. cut them out and drill/sand/finish them
4. put the new ocular cross pieces on and rivet them back on.
5. fight in your fabulous new helmet!
It should take about 1-2 hours worth of work for someone who has an angle grinder and some mild steel laying around, and even rudimentary armor craft experience. I could do the repair myself but I didn’t want to risk messing it up, and I honestly don’t have the time and desire to do it.
You could also just weld a discrete bar inside to close the gap and be done with it, but I don’t think that would do this beautiful work justice.
I paid $290 back in February to buy this helmet. It’s worth every penny of that, and the craftsmanship is phenomenal. It’s one of the cleanest built helmets I’ve seen in a long time...EXCEPT for the gap in the eye slots. I’m asking $280 (Paypal prefered) and I’ll handle the shipping in the CONUS. You get the helmet cheaper than you can buy it from Svan, and you don’t have to wait. You will still have to get it modified to make it legal for SCA combat, but I think it will pass muster for living history and other groups.
I'm also willing to discuss trade toward the total price.
