13th Century Texas

Post by Edric »

For the folks in Texas..

There is a new email group concering the formation of a new group.

It will focus on authenticity and a period in the late 13th century. Most everything else is pretty much up in the air at this point although the owner of the list has some ideas of where it is headed.

Signup on the egroup here if you are interested:

Jump forward to the 14th and you'd land my wife almost certainly... but I can't see her wanting to mess with hopelessly-backwards 13th-century England...

Before I start let me say I prefer the 14th century also. I however I can slide my time period to be able to work with a more period group.

I do not see how you can say how backwards the 13th century is backward compared to the 14th.

In the 14th century:
Europe experienced a famine, the black death, a mini ice age, Half of France changing hands several times, hoards of released mercanaries ravaging the land as brigands.

Shall I go on? Image

Cheers

I cannot imagine you'll get very far reenacting 13th century Texas. The archaeological data is just so scant, and there is no literary or iconographical evidence...

Image That is the name of the group. The actual location looks like it will be England.

My understanding is that in 13th Century Texas, the barbarians actually put beans in the chili. Clearly they were not as sophisticated as the 14th Century Texans (You know, the ones that lost the Alamo) were.

***GASP**** That's blasphemy Richard! Beans were never meant to be beans in chili..those Spaniards started that stuff, but the ice age took care of that!

Edric,
If the location is in England...do you really think many people here are going to go there for events? I mean, Gulf War is pretty far..I can't imagine the jet lag after going to England Image!

How bout a good migration era company?

the location is not England, the SETTING is England (or the Holy Land). I think this is a wonderful idea for those people who want a more authentic group than what the SCA can provide. Its closed to anyone outside of Texas, with hopes of 2-4 events a year, that would be no farther to travel those some events that we go to across kingdom or outer kingdom events.

I for one appluad this persons effort.

In western europe, yes, the 14th century was bad. In Central Europe, otoh, it was great times. Let us know which setting you choose: if you did Holy Land or 4th Crusade, my wife might be willing to help out.

English setting, is this a dog sport?....I always liked springer spaniels better than English setters....

On a half way serious note...
Why Just Texas and not Ansteorra (assuming this is SCA related)? It's one thing to say we want to hold events only in Texas, but to tell someone they can't even drive over to participate is pretty rediculous. A good way to make sure your group never grows! The SCA kingdom area is much more population dense than just Texas.

If you want nothing to do with SCA, the same still applies. Make it clear that the name will be 13th Cent Texas, and that all functions will be here in Texas, but allow others to participate. As a Texan, we need to show compassion for those not fortunate enough to be Texans Image.

Everytime I try and access the site, yahoo is down!?

My vote is that the organization should be set in Outremer. You've already got the atmosphere going with the climate (ah, El Paso!), and you can have events practically year-round! However, I have a couple of questions:

1. Will this be a group using steel blunts?

2. Will there be equestrian activities?

3. How strongly will one encourage the ladies to participate in proper persona impression?

4. How much of your kit will be made, as opposed to purchased?

5. Will there be an Authenticity Officer? (very important point!)

6. Will the combat model of Regia Anglorum be used?

7. Will the authenticity be up to and including no glasses, etc?

I'm getting excited...

Good time and place; Under Edward I (well, Edward IV, if you want to be picky - don't forget the Confessor was King of England, and there were two other Pre-Conquest Edwards, Alfred the Great's son and great grandson; but I digress) expansionist, positive, beating the living daylights out of the Welsh and Scots (suck on THAT, Wallace!)- my kind of time and place.

Outremer in the second half of the C13 - not a good place to be. Under threat from the Mamluks, losing territory steadily, Baybars just about to appear on the scene; nah.
