Aventail

Post by Khann »

I need to understand how to put the aventail on the helm? Should the visor hit the chain?
Should the pattern go even with the visor point? Just below the visor point?
Even with the hinge?
Or does the visor affect the mounting?
How about highpoint vs. back point?

Thanks Khann

On my bascinet the aventail follows the bottom edge then sweeps up to the temples at the face. The front then drapes across my face at nose level. I think there are many ways to do it. Older helms have a higher line of vervels and some later helms have the mail drapes from the bottom edge only with out the rise on the sides. The bascinet spans a long time, so look at effigies from the correct time period for your helm. As for the visor, the aventail sits between the helm and the visor when closed.

Yes, the visor will hit the chain and it's mounting leather and vervelles.

As for the run and position of the maille, go with Munz's advice.
The effigy of the Black Prince seems to show a typical method of positioning the maille.

You didn't say what kind of helmet you have.

The above answers are for bascinet.
Your helmet may well need a different answer.

There's a bit more action on your cross-post on this topic, Khann.

But yes, do tell us if the vervelles are already attached.

I am not sure what the shape is. I have asked Cad to include the vervelles.

The other I asked for either a high point or back with round nose visor. Vervelles to be included.

I crossed posted to insure I got the most common answer as well as the opinion of the more period minded.

Thanks Khann
