This is a re-enactment group based in Ireland. They have some pictures of their folks using a strapped shield and no central boss. I am trying to find out if they have any documentation on this but my emails to them keep bouncing. Anyone know them???

If you don't, do you have any documentation on these shields? Since I prefer a strapped shield I'd love to find out that I can do it and be period.
Thanks
Bran

They don't mention which era they are recreating, which throws up warning signs. The first picture appears to be late Viking Age. The sword is a type X Norman, so up to the 13th century in Ireland I suppose.
I don't know about Ireland, but the two shield types used in that period would be the center grip "Viking" (to a lesser degree in later centuries) and the "Norman" kite.
A strapped round ("target") is very handy; I wonder what the era of provenance would be?
