Yes! They're the medieval version of trash cans with burning stuff in them--people tend to congregate around them in little groups, especially at Estrella where the evenings can get a bit cold.

Steve, absolutely. I'm really happy with them, and the pleasure they have provided me and mine, and our guests. If you like the idea, by all means use it.

A little background: I built a modular round table which could seat the entire Brotherhood of the Gauntlet around it, and decided that I wanted to have some fire both in the center of the table and outside the table, for psychological and physical reasons. Unity, inclusion, warmth, light, all those. I built three tripod-style brazier stands, which were not built very sturdily, but which proved the concept. I then built four four-legged brazier stands, to replace them--those are the ones you see in these pictures.

Construction is simple: Make four 1.5" x 1.5" peices about three to four feet tall, join them with 1x material cut to about 4" wide, cut some steel sheet into strips about 12" long and 1" wide, attach it to the interior corners of the legs at the top, bend them down to provide a resting place for a medium-sized (14" or so) wok, put an eye lag at the bottom of two legs to stake the thing down sturdily, and voila, brazier. This thing can be made from wood you get at your local home depot--ours are made from reclaimed doug fir I had access to when I was timber framing in southwest Colorado.

Ah...brilliant! I was wondering how you kept the things from tipping over - the eye bolts with a stake driven through is a fantastic idea!

What do you put in the braizer for fuel? Wood?

Do you ever get grief over the braziers at certain events/camping sites? Anyone know if they might be allowed at Pennsic?

Yes, wood. Small stock, usually wood scrap from various projects throughout the year, cut down to no more than 10" long. The larger fire pit likes to digest oak at a rate of about a half cord in five days.

The Brotherhood usually does two events a year:

Las Vegas Ren Faire, no problem. The fire is off the ground.

Estrella War, no problem. The fire is off the ground.

The main "danger" is the thing tipping, but we keep them far and away from any tents and have fire extinguishers stashed away at various points throughout camp.

What's Pennsic's rules on fire? As wet as the area is, it would strike me as hilarious if it had a more restrictive fire regulation than an arid locale.

Pennsic's rules on fire vary from year to year. Yes, Pennsic isn't in a desert like your Las Vegas event and Estrella. But last year, we had a terrible draught here in the Northeast and I bet the laws at Pennsic were particularly restrictive. The good thing, however, about Pennsic is that when it's that dry, it's also incredibly hot, so you don't need a fire to warm yourself at night. This year, it was so soggy I bet starting a fire was a chore.

Of course, we cooked our entire Saturday night meal over an open fire in a two-day long rainstorm last weekend. Not my doing at all. We have Bob Hurley to thank for keeping the fires going. I'm just sayin'...

Actually, we do have a group called the 'Brotherhood of the Brazier' and it has grown up around me and 2 other nonconformist trouble makers and my brazier. To be honest they are really easy to make. Imagine a very shallow spangen helm with a thick brow band and you have a Brazier. If you do not want to go to all the hassle of making one then I must reveal the source that made mine, though he has started making them much fancier than he did when I got mine....
