Crosshilt construction
I'm constructing a sword and wish to use a crosshilt instead of a basket. I'd like to make my own, not really having the money to drop on a nice commercial set. So what is a cheap yet effective way of constructing a crosshilt and pommel for a single hand sword. I'm using the last of my rattan to make the sword so even though i know a rattan crosshilt is easy, i don't have the materials available. Thanks.

If you have the tools, I bet you could make a beautiful set from blocks of wood, I would want a planer, a grinding wheel, a jigsaw, and some sandpaper. Sand them smooth and perhaps cover them with silver leaf or gold leaf from the hobby store (didn't Richard I have a tournament where the swords were all wood covered with gold leaf?).
I plan on trying my hand at a couple in the new year, I'm much better with wood than steel.
