making SCA legal axe heads

Post by captain_america »

What should I make them out of? It has to be SCA legal and it can't be neoprene because I have no where to get it. I've heard about some type of foam but I don't know which type.

one of the things that I use to make my axe & mace heads is that of close cell foam from army sleeping mats. these can be gotten at most surplus stores. the other options is to get the sleeping mats that Coleman makes. I believe that WalMart sells them for around $5-$6. another thing that works is the use of thin leather it gives a solid hit and does last for a while. This though is for use as the edge not the whole weapon.
Something that I have also seen done was the use of a leather cover for the Axe head and edge. This gives it a more period look and makes it last a bit longer.

Broadhead target foam works great for this as well. Its hard yet almost weightless.

Should be able to find it anywhere they sell archery supplies.

Orthotic shoe foam... see if you can find a company that makes orthotics and see if they'll sell you their scrap or maybe just chunks of it.

Here's a pic... (ignore the god-awful pants, they're long-gone)...

The axe is three layers of shoe foam, laminated (side-by-side, as in each layer makes up the profile of the axe) with rubber cement. It's got good compression but still hits nice and solid.

Wulfgar,

For what it is worth most of the SCAdian Vikings that I know were striped pants as well.
