Chausses and fighting

Post by James C »

Ok so i have some linen chausses from historic enterprises. They function great for just wearing around. But i run into a problem with them as soon as i try to fight in them. The simple act of kneeling pulls down my chausses.... painfully. The sides of my braies get twisted and pulled down because the chausses will not come back up completly. Am i doing something wrong? Can something be changed? Or do i need something else for fighting in? Could joined chausses be a solution? Or better yet what would have been worn for my persona, 1390's french.

Thanks,

Landen

James: "The simple act of kneeling pulls down my chausses.... painfully."

Yet another testimonial to the need to move toward "counted" blows *grin*...

You're probably not doing anything wrong; the linen chausses are not as forgiving as some others. I don't know if you were following the other thread, but chausses made from wool appear to have a great deal more stretch -- this is certainly my experience with the ones I wore this past Twelfth Night. I don't know if Gwen has any made from wool that are light enough to use for combat (the ones I wear are positively toasty; I fear they would be inappropriate in the "heat" of combat), but you might want to consult with her on the matter.

Hope this helps... AoC

I seem to be getting a lot of questions about this lately, so I might as well answer it here.

As Jay points out, the wool has more give than linen, so wool is a better choice than linen. If you want to use these for fighting, ask Francena for wool (or state this on the order form if you're ordering online) rather than wool blend, because the wool is more elastic than some of the blends.

The reason the chausses are pulling your braies down is because you have them pulled up too tightly, leaving no room for your knee when you bend your leg at an acute angle (kneeling). The extra length has to come from somewhere, so they pull down from the top to make room for your flexed knee. You can avoid this by wearing garters under your knee to keep the chausses supported on the lower part of your leg and by adjusting the tie at the waist so you have baggy knees. If you're wearing your leg harness over the chausses, make sure you have baggy knees over your knee behind your knee cop. This is easily done by strapping your leg harness on with your leg up on a bench, then readjusting the waist tie then you put your foot on the floor. If you do this you'll have enough room for your knee to bend and the chausses won't pull your braies down and pinch.

Good luck!
