Fighting for a cause

Post by Noe »

Next week, the warriors of Avalon and Vale de Draco will be fighting in a charity tournament. Each fighter will choose from a list of charities. In the end of the tournament, the champion's chosen charity will recieve half of the money. The rest of the money will be divided out among the other fighter's charities.

To add to the fun, and encourage donations, we will be fighting with ransom rules in the first round of the tournament. Fighters, when they lose the a challenge, will be considered "captured". He can use money donated in his name to ransom himself to continue the challenge.

After the time of challenges, when no one is capable of ransoming themselves any longer, we will move to a grand melee format. It will be much like a warlord tourney, with the captured fighters fighting on the side of the man who bested them. The captain of the side that wins the grand melee will be proclaimed champion.

This is going to be a big deal for Avalon, even thought there will probably only be about ten fighters participating. We will be fighting at St. Alban's church in Tokyo. In addition to fighting for a cause -- which I hope will encourage greater understanding of the knightly virtue of charity among the Avalon ranks -- we will receive fairly high-profile community exposure.

I welcome any suggestions that you might have. We need to make this look as good as possible to make it work, and we need to really sell this to the crowd.

Just so's you know, the event was tremendously successful. The Grand Champion was Sir Cadogan, who championed the cause of the Tokyo Womens Center. The total collected donation money was something around $1100. At the feast afterwards, Sir Cadogan generously divided the contents of the treasure chest -- a large wooden chest filled with gifts donated by the fighting peers of Avalon and the SCA (although Avalon uses "peer" in a different way) -- amongst his minion... er, "retinue".

Much amusement was had by all. Everyone agreed that it is much more fun to fight for a noble cause.
