Well, it's a sealed deal. I'll be taking a load of gas cylinders today through wednesday each evening. I'm not sure exactly how many there are.

To cover costs associated with the armour-in, I'm thinking of a couple raffles (dishing domes and a separate one for a propane forge). This would allow for just a nominal fee (~$2 to $4 depending on how many plan to come) per person to cover port-o-potties.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I'll add a "who's coming" list to the site, so everyone can know if they've been accounted for or not. You can post here or email me to let me know you're coming. No hurry...you got a couple months to decide!

I would be interested in attending if you could stand a total neophyte armorer who has spent a good bit of time in armor and could go "Ooh! and Ahh! " a lot at what the other folks are doing.

Reagards.

No problem! I'm willing to bet a few spontaneousy armoured combat situations arise! We have a nice creek begging for a bridge battle!

Half the fun of armouring is hearing the oohs and ahhs!

Round Rock....there will probably be a couple others from out that direction coming. I'll start a list this weekend on the site of those coming and where they are coming from. This way rides and such can be coordinated if needed.

I just bought 2300 lbs of pure iron oxide for smelting. Maybe some smelted iron helm fittings?

Howdy!

I'm interested, and I'll check with Alexis. At the least, I can bring his patterns and examples for 4130 gauntlets, legs, and arms (in progress, now). And if he's not looking, half the equipment from his shop, again... ;)

I'd really like to see that smelting...

So, how about that 'who's coming' list?

It's still early enough that I might be able to order some 4130 and have it before the armour-in. Anyone interested?

Our home system got cooked with lightning so I haven't been able to update the page. Like wise, I can't check my "kragaxe.com" email either. Blocked by firewall at work, fireed by lightning at home!

Hopefully it will be more dry in June. Our place was an island last week with the flooding. ~8' of water over the main road going to our place! We live at the top of the ridge...but obviously well within misquito flight distance!

I'll be checking on steel sheet prices in the next couple weeks (16/14 ga mild). How many are interested in getting some?

Friday night...rattlesnake chili night. BYOB...I'll provide the rattlesnake :D . Killed a 4 1/2 footer the other week! Did you know that even after entrails, head and skin have been removed, the body/meat will still writhe!?

Anyone have a small MIG welder? I have a 220V miller arc welder (40-240 A AC/DC). I have a dryer type 220 plug and a miller welded plug available.

Showers are being built this week along with the housing for the smelting furnace.

One new knifemaking forge is completed. The burners for the steel melting furnace are being made next week.

I'll be cutting up the gas cylinders for dishing forms this week and next week.

We should have the replacement parts for our computer today so I'll be able to be on-line again from home this week.

Needed: persons willing to *teach* a particular aspect of armouring.
Things I think would be good: Hot raising, gauntlets 101, sallet/armet/closed helm faces, articulation(not sloppy loose rivet movement, but true articulation)

Crap; I can not do any of those....

But; I can show one how a Norman spangen band should crest over the top.
The raising/fluting to get the ridge to fit with the cross band with a nice peak.

Oh well... can I be a JAFO?

I hope that this is not completely out of line, but I would like to tell my dad about it. He lives in central Texas in Whittney.

He isn't an armourer, but he is an engineer with an interest in the middle ages. I don't think he has ever had access to any armorers. I am pretty sure that he would enjoy the weekend, and he really knows his way around a shop.

Is that alright?

Hal,
From looking at pics of your work, I think you'd have quite a bit to offer.

Fredrik,
Leather would be a great idea. Simple leather enhancements are often overlooked by a lot of plate armourers!

Freiman,
No problem...equal opportunity armouring, anyone's welcome...ex-girlfriends and ex-roommate of mine being the only exception :D. In fact, Sunday we'll have about 15 Hooter's women jumping on mini-trampolines while we armour. OK, maybe not...how about one middle aged, slightly overweight armourer hammering while wearing a sweaty white T-shirt :D .

I'll bring my leather tools then and some scrap for practice on.

On another note, any chance that I'd get the chance to learn to forge a dagger? I'm involved in a contest where I must have made everything I'm wearing (down to the small clothes). Wearing a weapon I forged would be a great plus!

Dangit!

My brother will be getting married that weekend, in Mississippi. I am pretty sure that my Dad has something to do that's more important than armouring. But I am sure that he would have enjoyed it.

Yes, June 25-27th. Here's the website (also posted earlier in this thread)
http://www.100megsfree3.com/kragaxe/eve ... xas04.html
As for daggers...it depends. I have a few forges you can use. I'll be fairly busy doing other things, and I don't let persons who aren't fmiliar with them use my forges unsupervised. Your best bet would be to work on these during evening hours...much cooler then anyways I figure people will be up pretty late! I always have a few forge projects going. Two people can use a forge at once. While one is heating, one is hammering.:D You (I) can rough hammer out a *standard* sized dagger pretty quick. Personally, I would shoot for a single-edged blade like for a baselard, dirk or ballock. Once rough forged, you can finish up with hand files or grinders whenever/wherever. Using plain 1050 or maybe 5160 (car spring), you can heat treat using a BBQ pit and some vegetable oil back home if you don't get to that point here.

I have not been out here for a while, but put me down as at least a tentative.

I have been doing this a while, and I can teach most basic stuff pretty well. Is there anything that ya' all want a class in? I see Krag's suggestions on the website, any others.

I can teach gauntlets, but my designs are not the most period, but they work well for SCA combat. I have both a simple non-period design, and a more complicated more period design, that you can see on my in stock page. I think I have parts for another pair, and if not, then learning how to use the Beverly Shear can be part of the class.

I can teach pauldrons too. Mine are contructed similar to those in TOMAR, but my design is different.

Come to think of it, I need to do a dog face visor for my new bascinet, and that means hot raising the eyeslots, so I could at least demonstrate that. I will not claim to be very good at it, but I have done a few things.

Now, heat treating interests me. I might bring along a demi out of 4130. I have not even cut it yet, but this might be a good time. By the way, I own the other half of the sheet of 4130 that Maelgwyn bought. I just have not really had time to play with it.

Krag, The only thing keeping me from comming is the 1560 miles between us. Comming from the LA area in Cal. I am very new to all this and would love to make it, but I would spend considerable time and money getting there, and I would have to come home at the end of it. I will be one of the ones oohing and awhing, if can make it.

Is there anyone that is comming from anywhere along my path that would be willing to share the expenses of getting there and back?

Morgan,
Yes...we have a lovely ravine with a small bridge. I might even be nice and clear out the poison ivy :D . I haven't fought since Gulf War year before last and a couple demos in the last two years. I'm really looking forward to having some other fighters around! I'm sure I've forgotten all the bad habits by now...of course, I've forgotten the good ones also!

William,
That's a heck of a drive! Every now and then someone has one out your direction. You might try and stir up some interest out there. i know there's quite a few guys out there. James River Armoury (Eric still around?), Clay (artist formerly known as POD), a few up towards Oregon and such. Y'all even have all the rattan importers out there! If someone had the time and interest, it could be a pretty big shin-dig.

The showers are almost done and the smelting area will be enclosed by this weekend. I won't have the clay furnace up, but I'll have a *make-shift aggie-built smelting device" up and running! :D

I finally have the home computer back up and running properly so I'll update the page with some more pics and info when I get home this evening.

When I get back in town, I'll get some current steel prices for 14/16 ga mild.

Anyone have aluminum dust? I made some steel the other day with thermite. Pretty neat.

How about a torchlight tourney Saturday night? Freak the neighbors out a bit!?

I am still planning on being there, but I may not be able to do much. I have been having problems with my right elbow, and I cannot really swing anything at the moment, either sword or hammer. I cannot say when it is going to be any better.

List me as a strong maybe, at least for the day on Saturday.

I'm probably OUT now. I'm likely to be travelling for work, damn it. I'll mention the thread to those guys. They read the archive relatively regularily, but I don't know how "into" armouring Timo or Drake are. Dunk has been pretty busy with real life stuff.

I think this will be a lot of fun.

Chupa wants to forge a dagger; from some various steels we will be bringing. We got O1, O2, A1, 1/8" by 2" by 30" industrial hack saw blade, 1/4" by 2" by 5 feet. of virgin automotive spring steel. Plus some we don't even have a clue about....

Mike is most interested in hot raising, he was wondering how to get Master Thaden to come down.

JoeBob wants to see the forges.

I would like to show how one shapes a nice ridge on a Norman spangen.

Hmm....If I want to try to forge a spear head, what kind of chunk of metal would be needed? Would rebar be suitable?
